You can put in 16 weeks of marathon training… and still leave your best race on the course 🏃🏻‍♂️

Because being FIT enough to run your goal time and knowing how to actually RACE a marathon are two different things.

In Episode 310 of the Healthy Runner Podcast, I sit down with 2:19 marathoner, coach, and writer Peter Bromka Peter Mancini Bromka to break down:

🏃🏻‍♀️ How the first 3–5 miles should feel

🧠 What to focus on during those tricky middle miles

🔥 How to handle the final 10K when your brain says SLOW DOWN

⏱️ What to do when you start falling off goal pace

🌡️ How to adjust for hills, wind, heat, and unexpected conditions

You did the training.

Now let’s make sure you race the marathon you’re capable of running 💪🏼

Most runners treat strength training like an optional add-on.

That’s a mistake.

Strength training isn’t there to make you look stronger.

It’s there to help you stay healthy enough to complete the training.

🍌📞 MARATHON RUNNERS… WE NEED TO TALK!

I just finished my goal marathon on Sunday but for those of you training for a November race…

Marathon training is NOT the time to start cutting calories! 🚫

One of the biggest mistakes I see runners make is increasing their mileage while NOT increasing their fueling to match their training demands.

Here’s the problem 👇🏼

When you’re consistently underfueling, you’re putting yourself at risk for:

❌ Slower recovery between runs

❌ Increased risk of running injuries and bone stress fractures

❌ Decreased strength and running performance

❌ Hormonal disruptions

❌ Constant fatigue and poor training adaptations

Remember, FOOD IS FUEL! ⛽️

Your body needs ENERGY to handle those long runs, recover from hard workouts, and build the strength and endurance necessary to run 26.2 miles feeling 💪🏼

💛 The goal isn’t to eat less. It’s to fuel appropriately so you can train stronger, recover faster, and show up healthy on race day!

Should EVERY run be slow during your marathon taper?

Not necessarily.

If faster running has already been part of your training, completely eliminating intensity isn’t always the goal.

Instead, we can keep small doses of faster running while dramatically reducing the overall workload.

That could mean:

⚡ Strides

⚡ A shorter race-pace workout

⚡ Brief intervals with plenty of recovery

Think less volume—not necessarily zero intensity.

And if you haven’t been doing speed work during your training, your taper is NOT the time to suddenly start!

My favorite way to remember it:

Keep the rhythm. Reduce the dose.

Tapering does not mean doing nothing.

It means reducing the training load while keeping your body connected to the rhythm and intensity of running.

The four big changes are:

Volume comes down.

Frequency may stay similar.

Intensity stays in small doses.

Strength training shifts to maintenance, then stops during race week.

The work that built your strength and fitness already happened. Now the goal is to arrive at the start line fit, fresh, and ready to run.

My athlete Thomas is a great example. At 48, he built back to consistent running after a 10-year layoff, added strength training, and is now preparing for his second marathon without the knee pain that originally brought him to coaching.

Keep the rhythm. Reduce the dose. Stop guessing.

Send this to the runner who is tapering soon and keeps wondering if they should do more.

Great scenic shake out run 🍂 and pretty neat museum all about glass making!

Race week is NOT the time to experiment 🚫

No new shoes.

No new workouts.

No new foods.

No new recovery tricks.

You’ve done the work.

Now stick with what your body knows.

Race week is about FAMILIARITY 🙌🏼

🏅 Medal Monday!

Isn’t this one unique?! 🤩 My first medal made out of glass…only fitting after running the Wineglass Marathon in America’s Crystal City! 🍷💎

Grateful for the opportunity to get out there and run a nice, hard 26.2-mile effort. There’s something special about crossing another marathon finish line and being reminded of everything it takes to get there.

Strong legs help carry you through 26.2… but a strong mind keeps you moving when the marathon gets hard 💪🏼🧠

And to everyone heading into marathon week, whether you’re running Chicago, Hartford, Cape Cod, or anywhere else…trust your training!

You’ve done the work.
You’ve put in the miles.
Now it’s time to believe in yourself and enjoy the experience.

When it gets hard, remember: you are stronger than you think 💪🏼

Go get that medal! 🏅🔥
