Each month, UC IDD Education Center provides a free monthly zoom training focused on sharing resources and information that support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the lifespan.

This month, in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a panel of professionals with developmental disabilities will describe their workplace journeys. Our Community Outreach Advocate, Courtney Hineman, will be among them!

October is which is the perfect time to introduce you to our friend, Levi.

This adorable 15 month old is determined and has the best smile that melts your heart, according to his developmental specialist, Mindy Flora. Levi has hearing loss and wears a hearing aid (you can see it on his head). Mindy is working with Levi and his family on crawling and getting from laying on the floor to a sitting position; on using sounds and gestures, signs for speech; and on feeding with gaining more textures.

Keep up the great work, little buddy!

We hope you'll join us in celebrating Ginger Kavalauskas' retirement on October 22!

Throughout her 27 years with the Board, Ginger has brought an incredible amount of knowledge, dedication, and commitment to the SSA and Medicaid Services departments. Her work has often happened behind the scenes, but its impact has been significant, helping ensure our services are properly funded, supporting our staff, navigating an increasingly complex Medicaid system, and ultimately helping us continue to serve individuals and families throughout Butler County. Thank you, Ginger, for your years of service and dedication. We wish you a very happy and well-deserved retirement and all the best in this next chapter. Congratulations!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Meet Christina Polen and her beautiful family. Christina has been an SSA for over 5 years.

In your own words, what is the role of an SSA?
"The role of an SSA is being an advocate for the people you serve in order to help them access the world and live meaningful lives while providing support to ensure they have access to resources to be successful."

What is the most challenging part about your job?
"The most challenging part of my job is trying to not let the hard days follow me home. When you are working with real people on real problems you want to be all hands on deck as often as you can however, that is not always realistic."

Most rewarding?
"The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the progress individuals have made in their lives. Getting to see someone’s face light up because they are able to go in the community with peers, were offered a job or went on their first vacation; it is amazing to get to be a part of these moments."

What motivates you to do your best?
"Knowing that my work can directly impact someone’s day to day life, motivates me to do my best."

How would you describe your team in exactly three words?
"Dedicated, passionate and adaptable."
