Leah, an international student at Dartmouth College receiving financial aid, became seriously ill and was admitted to Dick’s House. Her father, Walter, traveled from Lima, Peru — his first time leaving the country — to be by her side during her hospitalization.
Walter arrived speaking no English and with very limited financial resources. Maynard House was able to provide him with safe, welcoming housing during an incredibly stressful and unfamiliar time. Because of the language barrier, we frequently relied on Google Translate to communicate, helping Walter navigate everything from transportation and meals to understanding the resources available to him. We also helped him learn the local public transportation system so he could access groceries and food while caring for his daughter.
Despite the challenges he faced, Walter quickly became part of the Maynard House community. He often prepared meals to share with other guests and expressed deep gratitude not only for the housing, but for the kindness and support he felt “from day one.”
Stories like Walter and Leah’s remind us that Maynard House provides far more than a place to stay — we offer comfort, connection, and dignity to families facing medical crises far from home.
