We are full steam ahead chopping corn silage for the next year! Corn silage is a huge part of the rations for all animals at Oak Meadow Farms and one of our favorite projects to check off the to-do list!

Yesterday we sorted off what will go in the keeper pen, be offered in the sale, and head to the sale barn. We truly believe that holding our calves to a set standard and not wavering from what we expect out of the cattle helps us back the genetics we offer.

All calves were vaccinated and poured yesterday along with being sorted. The ones sorted off to stay still have a couple more rounds of sorting to make sure we only offer the best of the best. See who makes the cut in February.

Every cattleman knows weaning can be a tough time on a calf.

They’ve gone from being with their dam every day to being sorted, worked, vaccinated, hauled or moved, and introduced to a new routine, all while learning to live without the cow.

That stress can show up pretty quickly: bawling, walking the fence, going off feed and weakened immune systems.
We truly believe FerAppease® makes this transition smoother and shorter.

FerAppease is designed to help calves handle the stress of weaning by mimicking a natural calming substance produced by the cow called Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance, or MBAS. It isn’t a sedative. Instead, the goal is to help reduce the calf’s perception of threat so it can settle in and get back to doing what we need a weaned calf to do; eat, drink, stay healthy and grow.

For cattlemen, that matters.
A calf that spends less time stressed and pacing the fence and more time finding the feed bunk is a calf headed in the right direction.

At Oak Meadow, weaning isn't just about getting the calves away from the cows. It's about setting them up for the next stage of their development.
Good cattle take good management, and we're always looking for ways to do it better.

What are some practices you believe make a difference in waiting?

There’s nothing quite like the smell of chopping corn silage this time of year.

We’re in the process of getting sweet corn silage put up at Oak Meadow Farms, adding to the feed supply for the winter months ahead. A lot goes into growing a good crop, and getting it harvested and put up right is just as important.

For those of you feeding silage, you know the job doesn’t stop when the chopper leaves the field. There’s packing, covering, and plenty of tires to throw before the day is done!
