Even if you have not heard of the "clean plate club", you most likely know what it is. You may have grown up hearing your parents or guardians tell you that you couldn't leave the dinner table until you ate all of your food or finished all of your sweet potatoes.

Whether you still eat this way now or not, you do not have to finish all of your food, even if it is on your plate. Sometimes the amount of food we serve ourselves may be too little, and we can get more food. Sometimes the amount of food we serve ourselves may be too much, and we can put away the leftovers for another time.

When kids learn this rule and are pressured to eat (in one way or another), there are a couple of things that may happen as a result.

- They may eat fewer fruits and vegetables

- They learn that what matters is the amount of food on their plate, not whether their stomach feels too empty or too full

Because kids learn to eat when they aren't hungry this can lead to overeating, eating mindlessly, and even emotional eating.

Some ways you can support your child's eating habits:

- Give them a variety of foods to choose from.

- Involve your kids in planning recipes for the week and even making meals if possible. This is a great way to give your kids more control over what they eat.

- Ask your kids what fruits and vegetables they want as part of the meal. If your kid is picky, start with what they like and then introduce new vegetables over time. There is no rush!

- Include one sweet as part of the meal to teach kids that sweets are part of a balanced diet, not a reward or forbidden food.

With the COVID-19 pandemic bringing new challenges, many people have found it nearly impossible to reduce stress in their lives. But what is stress and how does it affect our health?

The feeling of being “stressed” is actually our body’s natural way of protecting itself, and in small amounts it can be very helpful! For example, when our ancestors faced stressful situations, such as being chased by a bear, the body would release hormones that make a person run faster. Today, the stress of being chased by a bear may not be as relevant, but what happens when someone is exposed to long-term stressors, like stress from work, family, finances or other demands?

A person’s brain reacts to these modern-day, chronic(meaning long-term), stressors the same way as it would to the bear chasing after you. During the stress response, or in flight or fight, adrenaline is released which increases heart rate and blood pressure. This means that consistent stress can be a major driver of high blood pressure.

Cortisol is also released in stress to increase our body’s energy in order to deal with the stressful situation. Chronic high cortisol levels increase glucose (or sugar) in the blood, which can contribute to the onset of diabetes.

Reducing stress is a serious challenge, but as you can now see, it is very important for your metabolic health and for maintaining a healthy weight. Many people may resort to stress eating during stressful moments, but instead, try things like calling a friend during a walk around your neighborhood, doing a short yoga YouTube video during the day, or reading a book. If you notice you are getting stressed mid-day, close your eyes and breathe in for 5 seconds, hold your breath for 5 seconds, and breathe out for 5 seconds. Repeat this for 10 breaths and you may find that you will feel a little less stressed!

Are you often overwhelmed by nutrition advice and don’t quite know where to turn? Follow this simple plate method for lunch and dinner to ensure you have a balanced meal every time!

Start by filing your plate with lots of non-starchy vegetables. Non-starchy vegetables include bell peppers, carrots, leafy greens, cucumbers, Brussel sprouts, asparagus, zucchini and many others (Starchy vegetables includes potatoes, corn, peas, and squash; to name a few). Vegetables are low in calories and high in important vitamins and minerals. They also have fiber which helps keep you full and aids in digestion.

Next, fill ¼ your plate with a protein food. Protein foods include meat, dairy, eggs, and even plant sources l like tofu, nuts and seeds, and legumes. Protein is essential for many processes in our body and also help keep us full!

Lastly, aim to keep your plate to ¼ carbohydrate foods like pasta, rice, bread, fruit, potatoes, and beans. Carbohydrates are essential for our brain function, but portions should be limited to ensure we are not over-indulging on calorie dense foods. Choose whole grain products often.

Don’t be afraid to add a moderate amount healthy fat to your plate as well. This includes things like olive oil, avocado, egg yolks, cheese, and nuts and seeds which are essential for a balanced diet.

By including all of these parts of a healthy plate, you will get all the nutrients you need to feel your best! Keeping things simple with this plate method is an effective way to maintain a healthy, balanced diet.

This is a common question that you might be having. While researchers continue to investigate the relationship between cancer and sugar consumption, it remains a fear for many patients, survivors, and families.

No single food can prevent or cause cancer itself. Focus on the foods that are nutrient dense, that deliver key vitamins and minerals that happen to contain natural sugar. Cutting out all carbohydrates (which turns into sugar in the body) and other sugar sources can lead to malnutrition.

However, it is recommended to limit added sugars. Added sugars are those added to food such as sugary cereals, baked goods, and desserts.

1. Read food labels
2. Limit sugary beverages - choose unsweetened beverages or high protein drinks with no added sugars.
3. Limit processed foods
4. Enjoy desserts on special occasions!

We are now in May which means we are halfway into Spring. This is the time of year when certain fruits and vegetables are at their prime time for growing and harvesting.

These foods include arugula, asparagus, beets, carrots, lettuce, chard, parsley, mushrooms, parsnips, radishes, spinach, strawberries, and more.

Eating seasonal foods is important because they are usually fresher, tastier, and more nutritious. They are also easily accessible at local grocery stores and local farmers' markets. Local produce cuts down on long travel and allows the food to be picked closer to its prime.

So shop local and enjoy what spring has to offer!

Allergy season is upon us!

For those fortunate enough not to experience seasonal allergies, lucky you. For those that get the headache or stuffy nose every Spring or Autumn, did you know that some foods may alleviate those symptoms?

Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to external allergens, such as plant pollen. Treatment typically involves allergy medication, but the addition of some foods that have linked to improving the immune system and reducing inflammation may aid in mitigation of allergy symptoms!

Honey – Some research suggests that local honey, containing the pollen that you’re reacting to, can have anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial effects.
Ginger – Ginger has been linked to a reduction of inflammation which occurs in the eyes, nose, and throat during allergy season.
Citrus Fruit – Citrus fruit contains high Vitamin C. Vitamin C has been linked to a reduction of upper respiratory inflammation caused by pollen.
Turmeric – Turmeric is a well-documented, natural, anti-inflammatory
Tomatoes – Outside of citrus fruits, tomatoes also offer a high Vitamin C content.
Fish – Oily fish such as salmon or sardines contain Omega-3 fatty acids, a compounds with a multitude of beneficial effects on the body, one of which is reducing inflammation.
Onion – In our last post, we mentioned phytonutrients. One of the many phytonutrients is called quercetin. Onions are an excellent source of this phytonutrient, and quercetin has been studied as a natural anti-histamine which may reduce the symptoms of allergies.

If you are experiencing seasonal allergies, please contact your physician for further guidance.
