Ever wonder why plant medicine, herbs, and nutrition got pushed to the fringe and labeled “alternative”? A lot of it traces back to one report and the richest man in modern history.
In 1910, a document called the Flexner Report came out, funded by the Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations. At the time, medical schools all over the country were teaching herbalism, nutrition, and naturopathy alongside everything else. The report branded most of that as unscientific and called for it to be shut down.
And it worked!! Over half of US medical schools closed within a couple decades. The ones that survived got huge grants, but only if they restructured around a drug-based, patentable model. Nutrition and plant-based teaching got dropped from the curriculum. Natural medicine wasn’t truly disproven but it was definitely defunded.
Rockefeller controlled around 90% of US oil refining. Petroleum isn’t just fuel, it’s the base ingredient for a huge range of pharmaceuticals. So a medical system built around synthetic, patentable drugs wasn’t only a health philosophy, it fed an industry he already owned.
Fast forward a century. Chronic disease is everywhere. Diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune stuff, all climbing. We’ve made real advances in emergency and acute care, no question there. But somewhere we lost the part of medicine that was about food, prevention, and the body’s own ability to heal.
Modern medicine isn’t the enemy but the story of how we got here isn’t neutral, it was shaped by money and by who stood to profit.
