At Behavioral Therapy Solutions, we practice assent and assent-based care within our programming because every learner deserves to have their voice, preferences, and comfort respected.

So, what does assent mean?

Assent is a learner’s willingness to participate and engage in an activity, intervention, or teaching opportunity. It means we are not just asking, “How can we get a child to complete a task?” but instead asking, “How can we create an environment where the child feels safe, supported, and motivated to participate?”

Within our programming, we:
✨ Listen to communication—both verbal and nonverbal
✨ Honor appropriate requests for breaks or pauses
✨ Follow the learner’s motivation and interests
✨ Create meaningful reinforcement opportunities
✨ Adjust our approach when something is not working for the learner
✨ Teach communication skills that allow learners to advocate for themselves

Assent does not mean avoiding challenges or only doing preferred activities. It means we support learners through challenges while respecting their autonomy, building trust, and ensuring therapy is meaningful and individualized.
