As we head into the peak of the respiratory season, we are seeing a significant rise in Influenza A and Influenza B cases across the country.
For our pulmonary rehab community, protecting your lung health is our top priority. Because chronic lung conditions can make flu symptoms more severe, we ask that you follow these essential precautions to keep yourself and your fellow classmates safe.
🛡️ Why This Matters for Your Lungs
Flu viruses can cause inflammation in your airways and deep in your lungs, often leading to:
* Exacerbations: Increased shortness of breath and coughing.
* Secondary Infections: A higher risk of developing pneumonia.
* Reduced Lung Function: Longer recovery times that can set back your rehab progress.
✅ 5 Steps to Stay Healthy
1. Get Your Trivalent Vaccine
The 2025-2026 flu vaccine is designed to protect against three major strains: H1N1, H3N2, and Influenza B. Even if you've already had the shot, it remains your best defense against severe hospitalization.
2. Practice the "20-Second Rule"
Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after touching gym equipment or being in public spaces. If soap isn't available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
3. Mask Up in Crowded Spaces
When in the rehab center or high-traffic areas, wearing a well-fitted mask can significantly reduce your risk of inhaling respiratory droplets.
4. Optimize Your Environment
* Improve Airflow: Keep windows open when possible or use HEPA air purifiers at home.
* Sanitize Surfaces: Regularly clean high-touch objects like phones, inhalers, and door handles.
5. Know the "When to Stay Home" Rule
If you feel "off," have a scratchy throat, or run a fever, please stay home. > CDC Guidelines: You should be fever-free for at least 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medicine) before returning to class.
🤒 If You Get Sick
Act Fast. If you experience flu-like symptoms, contact your pulmonologist or primary care doctor immediately. Antiviral medications (like Tamiflu) are most effective when started within 48 hours of your first symptoms and can prevent serious complications.
Stay hydrated, keep moving safely, and let’s keep our lungs strong together!
