Why are drinks with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and standard table sugar a health risk?
Despite its name, high fructose corn syrup is anything but natural. It is a highly processed sugar fructose that is used in higher quantities within foods, in part, because it is cheaper to process while also being easier to add to processed foods since it is already in liquid form.
These fructose types of sugars are high in empty calories, meaning they have zero nutritional value but take up room that more nutritional foods could fit. Let’s also mention that fructose takes your body considerably more steps to break that fructose down into glucose causing unnecessary inflammation and wear within your body.
Table sugar, much like HFCS is mostly fructose that our body has to transition to glucose to metabolize. Higher consumptions of fructose greatly increase your chance of several conditions that can be bad on their own but then those can lead to additional health issues. Conditions such as: weight gain/obesity, fatty liver, diabetes, heart disease, inflammation and even cancer.
Sucralose, a chemically altered sugar, can still cause all of the above issues as well as may cause a leaky gut lining or literally damage your actual DNA.
Consuming high levels of aspartame has been shown in some studies to increase cancer chances by 15% and that increase in is more likely with a side effect being that it stimulates your dopamine making the craving that much more severe than normal sugar substitutes.
