⭐About this lecture:
Vascular access is an essential component of effective patient care in veterinary medicine, yet selecting the appropriate catheter type can be challenging for new veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This one-hour webinar will provide a practical, clinically focused comparison of peripheral and central venous catheters in small animal patients. Participants will review the indications, advantages, and limitations of peripheral intravenous catheters versus central venous catheters, including peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and jugular central lines. The session will cover patient selection, catheter choice based on therapy needs, duration of use, and risk of complications such as infection, thrombosis, and extravasation. Basic placement considerations, maintenance protocols, and monitoring parameters will also be discussed, with an emphasis on team-based care and best practices in a hospital setting. This content is especially geared toward new DVMs and veterinary technicians seeking a clear, practical framework they can immediately apply in daily practice.
