🤎 What is melasma?
Melasma is a chronic pigment condition that shows up as brown, gray-brown, or patchy discoloration — most commonly on the:
• Cheeks
• Forehead
• Upper lip
• Chin
It’s often called the “mask of pregnancy,” but it can affect anyone.
🔥 What causes melasma?
Melasma is triggered by overactive melanocytes (pigment-producing cells). The biggest triggers:
☀️ UV exposure (UVA + UVB)
💡 Visible light (yes, even indoor light)
🔥 Heat (saunas, hot yoga, summer temps)
💊 Hormones (pregnancy, birth control, HRT)
🧴 Inflammation (over-exfoliating, harsh products)
Once melanocytes are stimulated, they’re very reactive — which is why melasma can be stubborn and recurrent.
✨ How Do You Treat It?
Melasma is managed, not cured — consistency is everything.
• Daily Mineral SPF 30–50 (tinted is best for visible light protection)
• Retinol or prescription retinoid to increase cell turnover
• Brighteners (vitamin C, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, hydroquinone)
• Barrier repair + anti-inflammatory support
• Professional treatments (chemical peels, specific lasers with caution)
⚠️ Aggressive treatments or too much exfoliation can make it worse.
💡 The Truth:
Melasma requires a strategic, long-term plan. The goal is to calm melanocytes, protect the skin, and gradually fade pigment — without triggering more inflammation.
If you’re struggling with melasma, let’s build a plan that works for your skin 🤍
