Challenging behavior isn’t always about disrespect. Often, it continues because somewhere along the way, it worked to meet a need.

Instead of asking, “How do I make this stop?” start with, “What is this behavior accomplishing?”

Understanding the need gives us a better place to teach from.

Control is tempting because it feels efficient.

When we are tired, stressed, or running late, our instinct is to micro-manage, issue orders, and demand immediate compliance just to keep the day moving. It looks like it works in the short term, but it usually just creates a power struggle where everyone leaves frustrated.

When we yell, demand, or use fear, we can force a child to stop what they are doing right in that second. But that isn't leadership — it’s just intimidation.

Leading with care isn't about being passive or letting your kids do whatever they want. It is about how you enforce your rules. You can hold a firm, non-negotiable boundary while keeping your voice calm and your approach respectful.

When we focus on care, we are teaching children why the boundary matters, rather than just forcing them to submit to our authority because we said so. It shifts the dynamic from an exhausting battle of wills into actual guidance.

When kids feel led rather than managed, they don't feel the need to constantly push. Drop the need to control every single moment and focus on guiding them through it.

Show them that the rules exist to keep them safe and supported, not just to prove who is in charge. ❤️
