A new therapy, called VERVE-102, is a one-off infusion. It uses gene editing to switch off the gene that tells the liver to make a protein called PCSK9. This protein usually stops the body clearing LDL cholesterol circulating in the blood. People born with a naturally inactive version of the gene have very low cholesterol throughout their lives and a much lower risk of heart disease. The therapy aims to copy that natural protection from a single treatment.

The drug, which can be bought for as little as 35p in supermarkets and pharmacies nationwide, is used by millions across Britain every year. While many take it occasionally without any problems, research indicates that regular or high-dose consumption could heighten the risk of severe cardiac complications.

A common painkiller widely used across the UK could pose a risk to heart health

Brenda Young felt an "intense overwhelming pain" in her chest when her mother died last year.

She was admitted to hospital with a suspected heart attack.

However, the 57-year-old, from St Fergus in Aberdeenshire, was instead diagnosed with what is known as broken heart syndrome.

Also called takotsubo cardiomyopathy, it is a sudden condition estimated to affect thousands of people in the UK each year.

Now she hopes a trial of medication aimed at mending broken heart syndrome, under way at the University of Aberdeen, can help.

Brenda Young hopes the University of Aberdeen trial can help thousands like her impacted by the condition.
