Twenty Pony Bird Leisure Services participants enjoyed a Cardinal Road Trip to Kentucky and Cincinnati to enjoy a St. Louis Cardinals game against the Reds at the Great American Ball Park. The Cards lost in extra innings but it was a fun game to watch. This will make the 9th MLB ball park that some of our travelers have visited through vacations with Leisure Services. On the way, we stopped in Kentucky to visit Churchill Downs/Derby Museum and the Louisville Slugger Museum in Louisville, KY. In addition, we also enjoyed a visit at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY while getting some golf in at the Puttshack. The trip filled the hearts of baseball and horse fans and all had a wonderful time.

Congrats to Anthony who was awarded July Associate of the Month at Walmart Festus after only 2 months of employment! He immediately impressed his managers and his job coaches with his great work ethic. Way to go Anthony!

Congratulations to Bridget and her unified partner and aunt, Tess, for winning silver medals at the Special Olympics State pickleball tournament. They traveled to Columbia, MO as our solo Pony Bird team and enjoyed a day of competitions. Bridget had lived in Columbia for several years, so she was excited to see many of her friends that she competed with in years past. In their unified doubles divisions, they came home with Silver Medals. Their smiles tell it all!

A group from Leisure Services enjoyed the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station . Everyone enjoyed hands-on experiences with fish and wildlife. The highlight of the day was meeting Chewy, their resident sloth. We also go up close and personal with sucker fish, turtles, otters, jellyfish, and sharks. We then stopped at Hodak's Restaurant & Bar for lunch, a St. Louis favorite known for their fried chicken. With fighting rain and heat all summer, our softball athletes still managed to get in a tournament. They participated in a Special Olympics Area tournament and traveled to Cape Girardeau for a day of competitions. We had a coach-pitch team, a unified team, and a group participating in their Individual Skills games. Everyone came home with smiles on their faces and medals around their neck. It was a great day! Our softball season has come to an end, but we still have tennis and bocce in full swing and getting ready to start our bowling season.

Sibshops are a celebration of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs. Sibshops reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another if they are given a chance. Siblings participate in a spirited mix of games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide range of abilities), participate in discussion activities, and get to know others who have something in common with them—a sibling with a disability.

Pony Bird is hosting a Sibshop Meet-and-Greet Family Outing at Quonset Lanes, September 27, 2026, from 11 am to 1 pm. The event is free for everyone. RSVP for the event by calling 636-282-1414, or email [email protected] (or click on the QR code in the image). We hope to see you there!

For more than 11 years, Charlie Wooten has been a dedicated leader, advocate, and champion for Pony Bird. Since joining the Board of Directors in March 2015, Charlie has generously shared his time, expertise, and passion in service to our mission. His leadership as Board Chair from July 2020 through June 2026 helped guide Pony Bird through a period of growth, opportunity, and impact for the individuals and families we serve.

We are deeply grateful for Charlie’s unwavering commitment, thoughtful guidance, and steadfast support over the years. His legacy of service will continue to shape Pony Bird for years to come.

As we thank Charlie for his remarkable leadership, we are excited to welcome Sue Curfman as our new Board Chair. We look forward to the future under Sue’s leadership as we continue advancing opportunities and enriching lives throughout our community.

Our partnership with Rock Community Fire Protection District is providing new opportunities for individuals to learn important safety skills.

Recently, participants met with Joycie and Alyson from the district's community education team, enjoyed a game of Safety Bingo, and learned valuable safety tips.

This is the first of many monthly sessions. Upcoming activities include a firehouse tour, CPR and First Aid training, and learning how an AED works.

We're grateful to Rock Community Fire District for helping individuals build confidence, knowledge, and life-saving skills!
