Think a joint replacement is your only option? Think again.👇

When cartilage degeneration and joint pain start affecting your everyday life, surgery may eventually become part of the conversation — but it doesn’t mean you have to stop the conversation there.

Regenerative medicine is an area of growing interest for patients looking for additional options for managing certain orthopedic conditions. Depending on your diagnosis, the severity of your joint degeneration, and your individual goals, treatments such as stem cell therapy may be something to discuss with your orthopedic provider before making a decision about surgery.

Considering a knee replacement? Wondering if there are other options worth exploring first? Come see us - you deserve to understand your options before deciding what’s next!

🚨Please join us in welcoming the newest addition to our practice, Dr. Michael Ulmer! 👇

Originally from Fairhope, Alabama, Dr. Ulmer attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned a degree in Chemistry while playing collegiate golf. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital, followed by a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Jackson, Mississippi.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ulmer has had the opportunity to work with Ole Miss, Tulane University, Columbus State University, and the Mississippi Mud Monsters, providing orthopedic care to athletes at the collegiate and professional levels. He is a fellowship-trained, board-eligible orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and joint replacement. He provides comprehensive care for a wide range of orthopedic conditions, with particular expertise in minimally invasive arthroscopic treatment of injuries and conditions affecting the knee, hip, and shoulder.

Dr. Ulmer believes that every patient deserves an individualized approach to care. He takes the time to understand each patient’s goals, lifestyle, and concerns before developing a treatment plan. Whenever possible, he emphasizes nonoperative and minimally invasive treatments, reserving surgery for patients who are most likely to benefit. His goal is to help each patient regain function and get back to the activities they enjoy.

Dr. Ulmer is excited to call the Nashville area home and looks forward to caring for patients throughout the community. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Anna, and their dog. In his free time, you can usually find him playing golf, watching college football, or checking out a new restaurant!

It’s been 2 years since we brought our MRI in-house — and we’re not looking back! 👇

Since then, we’ve heard countless positive things from our patients about the comfort and convenience of having an open MRI right here in our practice. But what we love most is what it means for the patient experience: fewer appointments across multiple locations, fewer drives across town, and less time spent piecing together your care. 👏

From your initial evaluation to imaging and treatment, our goal is simple — make exceptional orthopedic care as convenient and connected as possible.

🚨You’ve probably heard of hyperbaric oxygen therapy — but do you actually know what happens inside the chamber? 👇

HBOT combines increased atmospheric pressure with medical-grade oxygen to increase oxygen availability in the body. That increased oxygen exposure is clinically useful for specific conditions, including selected problem wounds, refractory osteomyelitis, compromised grafts and flaps, radiation tissue injury, certain acute traumatic injuries and more. Call our office at 615-391-4545 to learn more about HBOT ☎️

Over 50 and playing pickleball 👀? You might want to read this … Pickleball is keeping us moving — but we’re also seeing more Achilles injuries in active adults. In one study of pickleball-related foot and ankle injuries, Achilles tendon ruptures were the most common diagnosis, accounting for 39.4% of cases. Even more telling? A 2026 study found that 82.5% of pickleball-associated Achilles ruptures occurred in patients over 50. 🚨

The good news? Staying active as we age is exactly what we want — we just have to prepare our bodies for the demands we’re asking of them. Our foot & ankle surgeon Dr. Barksdale recommends maintaining calf strength, ankle mobility, and gradually building intensity before jumping into explosive movements like sprinting, lunging and changing direction.

Before your next game, check these boxes:
✅ Calf raises
✅ Calf/Achilles stretching
✅ Ankle mobility
✅ Dynamic warm-up
✅ Gradually increase activity

You probably don’t think much about what holds a knee replacement together. But this is one of the most important steps happening behind the scenes. 👇

During a cemented total knee replacement, bone cement is carefully prepared and applied to the implant and the prepared bone surface. The cement fills the space between the two and hardens to create a secure fixation — which is why the timing, consistency, and technique during this step matter so much.

A knee replacement is made up of thousands of tiny decisions and precise movements. This is just one of them. 🦴
