I visit my birth clients at least twice while they're pregnant to learn about what is important to them, talk over their options, and get comfortable with positions and tools. I love getting to spend this time getting to know them in a relaxed environment with no time pressure.

It's always a bonus when I get to snuggle a pet! 💜

Tell me about your pets (or better yet, post a photo)! I have a 5-year-old dark brown labradoodle named Laika and a 6-month-old brindle puppy named Cosmo

"What if my b***s make different amounts of milk?" First, don't worry!

Most people have a Variety Pack, and it can be caused by different things. If your baby prefers laying on a particular side or the flow rate of one breast, they may nurse more from one side. More milk removal means more milk production, so that b**b may go into over-achiever mode to keep up. You can encourage nursing on the other side and remove a bit of extra milk from the "slacker" side to help even things out, if you like, but be aware that pumping can create an oversupply. You may need to do the opposite and remove less milk from the fuller side.

The majority of women have slight differences even before nursing, and if it's not bothering you, it's generally not a problem!

What a good idea! I love the pics from my ultrasounds. I have a few brief videos, but would love to have the full footage!

How can you find mental health support after having a baby? Postpartum Support International does amazing work! One of the resources they offer is a directory of providers who have completed training specific to maternal mental health. You can filter by location and type of support to get the help you deserve. You can find the directory at www.psidirectory.com

I love PSI's motto: "You are not alone. You are not to blame. With help you will be well."

The changes in your brain and hormones during pregnancy and early parenthood are real and measurable. You are not just being dramatic. You shouldn't just be able to cope alone. You are worthy of rest and care.

If you catch your inner voice being rude to you today, take a second and try to talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend. If they were having a hard time, what would you say to them? Would you focus on their mistakes, or would you point out the positives? I named the critical voice in my head Brenda (sorry to any real-life Brendas 😬), and I tell her that I know she's trying to make things better with her advice, but that isn't really helpful right now, so shut up 😅

The "10 movements in 2 hours" can be helpful, but every baby is different! Knowing what is typical for YOUR baby is crucial.

Want a simple way to learn about their particular patterns ('cause goodness knows you've got enough on your plate)? Track their movements (kicks, jabs, pokes, and rolls) every day with the free Count the Kicks app, created by the nonprofit Healthy Birth Day, Inc! You can enable push notifications so you measure at the same time every day (there's no way I'd be remembering that on my own), and it creates a handy dandy chart so you can easily pick up on any changes and show your provider their history. It even has a contraction timer built in! They recommend that you start tracking at 28 weeks, or 26 weeks for high-risk or multiple pregnancies.

In the first 10 years the Count the Kicks program was implemented in Iowa, the state had a nearly 32% decrease in the stillbirth rate!
