🌻 Cultivating what matters
A couple of months ago, my husband and I planted a small wildflower garden behind our office.
It wasn't anything elaborate. The space felt a little bare, and we wanted to brighten it up for everyone who comes and goes from our building—our clients, staff, neighbors, and anyone else who happens to walk by.
Since then, we've watered it almost every day. A few of our staff have jumped in to help along the way, too.
Now, every time we come to the office, there's something new to notice. Bright zinnias opening up. Hummingbirds stopping by for a visit. Yellow finches landing on the flowers. Butterflies and bees making their rounds. It's become one of my favorite parts of the day to see what's changed since the day before.
The more I've watched this garden grow, the more I've found myself thinking about the people and relationships we care about most. In many ways, they aren't all that different.
The flowers didn't get here because of one really good day of watering. They got here because someone kept coming back. A little water. Pulling a few weeds. Paying attention. Trusting that even when it didn't look like much was happening, something was still taking place beneath the surface.
I have a feeling this little garden has more to teach me than I expected.
Over the next little while, I'd love to share some of the things it's been making me think about. Sometimes I'll be talking about flowers, but what I'm really talking about is relationships, taking care of ourselves, and what it means to cultivate the people, relationships, and parts of our lives that matter most. ~ Laura Taylor, MS, LCMHCS
