đź‘… Ever heard of Hairy Tongue?

Hairy Tongue is a harmless and temporary condition caused by an overgrowth of the tiny projections on the tongue called filiform papillae.

Common causes include:
▪️ Poor oral hygiene
▪️ To***co use
▪️ Excessive coffee or tea consumption
▪️ Certain medications, including antibiotics
▪️ Dry mouth
▪️ Not regularly brushing the tongue

The tongue may appear black, brown, yellow, or even green and have a “hairy” appearance due to trapped bacteria, yeast, food debris, or staining substances.

The good news? It is usually easy to treat by:
âś… Improving oral hygiene
âś… Gently brushing or scraping the tongue daily
âś… Staying hydrated
âś… Eliminating contributing factors such as smoking

While Black Hairy Tongue is generally benign, any persistent changes in your mouth should be evaluated by a dental professional to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Your mouth often provides clues about your overall health—don’t ignore what it’s trying to tell you.

Early Detection Saves Lives 👇

This case highlights a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma identified through biopsy.

This is exactly why routine screenings and timely referrals matter.

Oral cancer often presents subtly—small lesions, areas of erythema, or changes that can easily be overlooked. But early intervention can significantly reduce the need for aggressive treatment and improve patient outcomes.

🦷 As clinicians, vigilance is key.
👤 As patients, don’t ignore changes in your mouth.

When in doubt—biopsy.

Early detection saves lives 🤍

We had an incredible Lunch & Learn with Dr. Kelcie Barnts at Trinity Loft Dental, focused on one of the most important — and often overlooked — topics in dentistry: oral cancer awareness and early detection.

Dr. Barnts shared valuable insights on:
✨ Recognizing early signs and symptoms
✨ Identifying high-risk patients
✨ The importance of thorough intraoral & extraoral exams
✨ When to monitor vs. when to refer

Oral cancer can often go unnoticed in its early stages, which is why routine screenings are so critical. As dental professionals, we play a vital role in catching abnormalities early — when treatment outcomes are significantly better.

Thank you, Dr. Barnts, for an informative and impactful session, and to the Trinity Loft Dental team for prioritizing continued education and patient care at the highest level.

Your routine dental visit is more than just a cleaning — it could be life-saving.

📍 Stay proactive. Stay informed. Stay healthy.

Dark or pigmented spots in the mouth can be surprising to patients—and sometimes concerning. The truth is, many are completely harmless, but some can signal something that deserves a closer look.

As oral healthcare providers, recognizing the difference is key. From benign pigmentation to lesions that require biopsy or specialist evaluation, early identification makes all the difference.

Swipe through to learn:
• Common causes of pigmented spots in the mouth
• When a lesion is likely harmless
• Warning signs that warrant further evaluation
• When to refer to an oral pathology specialist

When in doubt, it’s always better to investigate than overlook.
