One focus fabric, one supporting fabric and one that gives you enough contrast is a very good place to start.

Tilly's five-inch color touchscreen puts the controls where I can see them clearly and reach them easily.

The part I want quilters to notice is not simply that the screen is new. It is how quickly they can understand what the machine is doing, adjust a setting and return their attention to the quilt.

Good controls should support the quilting without becoming the quilting project!

Pantographs can feel backward at first because your eyes are following a line while your hands are moving a machine you cannot see from the front.

I tell new pantograph quilters to begin with an open design that has a clear path. Trace it with your finger first, then follow it slowly with the laser until the movement begins to feel familiar.

The goal is not to land on every printed line with perfect accuracy. The goal is to build a smooth rhythm that looks good across the whole quilt!

I think backings are sometimes chosen too late!

We spend weeks, months or years making the front, then suddenly realize we need several yards of something for the back and start looking for the closest color.

The back is another chance to make a decision about the quilt. It can calm the front down, pull out a color that deserves more attention, or be an entirely different little surprise.

The right machine is not always the largest machine or the one with the longest feature list.

I look at how a quilter works. Does she love ruler work? Does she want room for large blocks? Is easy handling the priority? Will the machine live in a dedicated studio or share space with the rest of the house? Is computerized quilting part of the plan now or later?

Those answers narrow the choices in a much more useful way than comparing specifications alone.

A little reminder for this Sunday morning.

You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to leave something unfinished. You are allowed to be grateful for where you are while still hoping and praying for what comes next.

God's goodness is not measured by how much we manage to accomplish in a day.

Log Cabin blocks are simple until a tiny sizing difference repeats through several rounds.

That is why the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tools are interesting to me. You square up each round before adding the next one instead of waiting until the finished block tells you something wandered.

The 6-inch and 12-inch tool also works for Half Log Cabin and Courthouse Steps blocks. There is a 10-inch version for quilters who want to play with different finished strip widths.

A needle laser sounds like a small addition until you use it to line up a beginning, follow a marked point, or place the next pass.

Tilly's laser marks the exact needle position with a single dot. I can see where the stitch will land before the needle goes down.

That kind of help is especially useful when precision matters but I think new longarm quilters will appreciate it just as much as experienced ones.
