Back in March, I had the honor of co-hosting a beautiful full-day Drum Birthing Ceremony led by Mia of , alongside Sarah and Jen .haven . So many incredible souls gathered with us to create something sacred.

The process of birthing a drum was challenging at times, even through Mia gently assured us that each of us would leave with a beautifully completed drum with her signature weaving by the end of the ceremony, I wasn’t so sure that I fully believed it would be possible. But it was.

I have to be honest—I am completely in love with my drum. Seriously there is deep connection.

As I’ve reflected on the ceremony, I’ve come to realize that the healing happened in the making of the drum along side others. This subtle yet profound healing continued to integrate for weeks and even, in my case, months after the ceremony long ended.

Each drum has an umbilical cord that is to be removed when the time feels right. For months, I kept hearing, not yet. Until Sunday morning.

The message came soft and clear, with a deep knowing.

“I am ready. The shedding is complete.”

Many parts of me were still shedding what remained from the Year of the Snake and even though I was tempted to cut the cord sooner .. I knew the timing was off. Maybe you have felt this way too. There is no need to hurry because of a calendar. As we move through the Year of the Horse, please honor your own pacing, listen to your heart or perhaps your drum. So on Sunday, on the Summer Solstice, under the full light of the sun, I released the cord or chord.

If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of Mia’s Drum Birthing Ceremonies and feel the call, trust it. It is a deeply sacred, healing, and unforgettable experience and she is an amazing guide.

My Dad,
my favorite traveling partner, spontaneous adventure seeker and wisdom bearer.

He opened my heart to spirituality, music & art and so much more. He shared the world with me, to expand my perception of it. On the spur of the moment, we would jump in the car, drive through the tunnel and run in and out of NYC .. taking it all in .. enjoying its culture from every angle, from Opera to CBGB’s and everything in between. Our curiosity was as endless as my memories of our time together.

This year, I am the same age he was when he passed away. Feels very strange and when I reflect on him it hits different, in an unexplainable way. At the time, I didn’t realize how young he was, especially in his spirit. As I navigate this age, reflecting on his journey, I am realizing so much about him as a human being, not just as my father… but as the extraordinary human he was. I am blessed to be his daughter, for many, many reasons.

If you are having a mix of emotions today, know that you are not alone. For me, I am right there with you balancing between, love, loss, gratitude, acceptance, and a little residue of grief. It’s a delicate dance that my heart never seems to forget.

With all that being said .. be present with the strong amazing men in your life. Cherish each other. Sending love to all the amazing men, past and present, that continuously make our personal and collective worlds bright, Happy Father’s Day! Love to you.
