Late-Summer Herbs & The Art & Science Of Herbal Salve - Seed To Salve Herbalism Workshop Series with Jen Knight -

In this class, you will learn about the herbs that are ready to be harvested in the later part of the growing season and the varied ways to prepare them for use. We will go over which parts of the herbs to harvest and why, and briefly discuss seed saving, as a few plants will be in the beginning of that stage. We will visit the basics of Plant Spirit Communication to help guide our harvesting. Next, we will use an herbal infused oil as the basis for the salve we will make. We will then dive into the art & science of salve, going over the myriad of ingredients that can be used, ensuring good consistency, how to extend shelf-life naturally, and much more. We will discuss some of the varied applications for salve and how this changes depending on the herbs and essential oils used. You will bring home a jar of the herbal remedies we make.

As we move through the growing season, each class in this series will take you through a different aspect of herbalism. Throughout the series, you will learn how to safely identify medicinal plants growing in our area, the ethics and practice of wild harvesting, basic Plant Spirit Communication, when to harvest what parts of the plant, how to make a variety of herbal remedies and learn how to use them, and much more. The Seed To Salve herbal class series is taught by local Herbalist, Jen Knight, who brings over 29 years of experience to these in-depth classes. If you have wanted to learn more about safely working with and growing herbs and making your own herbal remedies, then this class series is for you!

There is nothing like Rosa rugosa to stop me in my tracks, smile, pause, and breath in its incredible scent. Of all of the plants we have studied so far, rose holds the highest vibration, soothing, uplifting, peaceful in its energy. It is such a delightful herbal ally to work with for body, mind, and spirit. 🌹💖

Shamanism is one of the oldest forms of healing and divination on the planet, spanning across cultures and continents for thousands of years. At its core it is a deep connection and understanding of nature and working with the wisdom and energies found there. A Shaman undergoes training to be a bridge between the Earth realms and the realms of Spirit, being able to travel within those realms via journeywork to meet, communicate, and work with Spirit Guides and Ancestors for guidance, insight, and healing.

We will start the afternoon off with setting sacred space, thinking about what areas of our lives we wish to focus this blossoming energy of abundance and creativity on. We will then take a guided journey together on the beat of a ceremonial drum, to meet our Spirit Guides and work with the energies of the waxing gibbous moon to gain insight on how we can align with the energy of spring, bringing new energy, inspiration, and growth into our lives. This journey will take place just a few days before the Full Moon on May 1st, which marks the halfway point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice. May 1st marks the height of spring, and is celebrated in many cultures as the landscape teems with life again, it is a time of fertility, new life, and rapid growth.

Bring a blanket, pillow, yoga mat or sleeping pad, and an eye covering (scarf or bandana or eye pillow) as you wish for comfort. You may choose to be seated or lay down during the journeywork. You will also want to bring a journal or notebook to record your experiences. Bring water and any snacks you may want to have on hand.

We will meet Sunday April 26th at 1pm at beautiful healing space on the second floor of The Earth Magic Shoppe at 39 School Street in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. Overflow parking is available at the library parking lot diagonally across the street.

Today is the New Moon 🌑 which marks the Chinese New Year!🎋🏮🧧 We have officially begun The Year of the Fire Horse!🔥🐎 We started the day off with a Full Solar Eclipse bringing us a Ring of Fire visible in Antarctica, a perfect ending, a completion of the Year of The Wood Snake, and beautiful beginning to this next cycle, next chapter! As we reset our energy and welcome in the blessings of the year ahead, I thought I would share some simple movements to help keep our energy flowing, passed down from Grandmothers and Grandfathers in China. This journey will be a bit different than ones we have done in the past. We will start the afternoon off with setting sacred space, reflecting on all the Year of the Wood Snake has held, and will work with the energy of the waning moon to lovingly release the remaining bits that are ready to be shed in the final days of the Year of the Wood Snake. Please take some time prior to our time together to reflect on what you wish to release at this time. We will then take a guided journey together on the beat of a ceremonial drum, to meet our Spirit Guides and the Spirit Totem of Horse to gain insight on what we collectively need to welcome the energetic shift the year ahead will bring. Horse brings a different skillset, wisdom, and medicine than that of Snake, we will look at how its perspective and energy can guide us as we are about to enter The Year of the Fire Horse on the New Moon on February 17th, 2026. We will discuss the energetics of the element of Fire in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is the branch of herbalism originating in China, and how we can work with these energies along with those of Horse for our highest good along our respective paths.

This herbal workshop series takes you step by step through learning about medicinal herbs, how to grow them and how to make your own herbal remedies. We will start this journey at the beginning, choosing herbal allies that grow well in our bioregion to work with and planting them from seed.

In this first class of the series in 2026, you will learn about the traditional uses of some of the medicinal herbs that grow well in New Hampshire. We will discuss how to grow them, how to identify microclimates within your yard to help them thrive once they are planted, and other tips for successful gardening. We will plant seeds from some of these herbs to take home and nurture and eventually plant out in our respective gardens in the spring.

Sunrise over Mount Monadnock on one of the shortest days of the year 🌄 Tomorrow we will have 0.01-0.02 seconds less daylight than today, marking the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
