At the end of this month I will be 52. It took me 47 years to realize that I need to rest. Not when I meet a certain goal, not waiting until some made up version of success is reached, not when someone else gives me permission. I need rest when, if not before the burnout sets in. I need rest before mentally I resort to “f**k it all” & bridges are burned. For years I built and hustled my identity & business as a yoga teacher. When menopause hit me like a truck I became a student again, a beginner, with a different perspective and an intuitive call to the texts. Svhadyaya-self study, contemplation, reflection. It is my most advanced practice. I retreat. I rest. I recognize new growth. I shed old skin. I let myself be. If you are feeling exhaustion, cynicism, inefficacy- a “why bother who cares” mentality, offer yourself rest. If you can’t rest because you can’t identify yourself beyond the exhaustion, start to observe and reflect. If self study seems complicated or another thing on the list. Come on retreat. We are all navigating transition - whether it be the season of the year or season of your life. We are all serving others in some way. Offer yourself the time and space to be. To see the amazingness of the world and re-recognize it in yourself. It all comes down to love friends. Not money, power, success. Be in love with yourself. Be in love with this life.
