Subject: ⚠️ Quick heads-up from your local Urgent Care: Island Stat Care in regards to the Parasite outbreak (Cyclospora) ⚠️
What to know about the Cyclospora spike 🦠
Hi everyone,
I wanted to post a friendly but important public health update. There is currently an active national outbreak of this parasite, and it is hitting several states hard right now.
Because kids' immune systems and hydration levels are especially vulnerable, I wanted to share what we are advising our patients:
🔍 1. What is Cyclospora?
It's a microscopic parasite (not a virus or bacteria) that people get from eating raw fruits, vegetables, or herbs contaminated with f***s (often from agricultural runoff or water). It is NOT passed from person to person.
🤢 2. What are the symptoms?
Intense, watery, and sometimes explosive diarrhea. It is accompanied by bad stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss. A big hallmark of Cyclospora is that symptoms can seem to get better, and then come right back a few days later.
🩺 3. Why your doctor needs to know:
If you bring your kiddo or yourself to our urgent care for a persistent stomach bug, please ask them specifically to test for Cyclospora. Standard stool tests do NOT check for this, and it requires a special lab stain or PCR panel to detect. Once found, it is easily treated with a specific prescription antibiotic.
🧼 4. How to protect your family right now:
* Ditch the bagged salads: Pre-washed, bagged salad kits are historically a common culprit. Opt for whole heads of lettuce, discard the outer 2–3 layers, and wash the inner leaves yourself.
* Wash everything: Rinse all fresh berries, grapes, cilantro, basil, and green onions vigorously under running water—for now we are only recommended cook veggies!!
* Cook when you can: Cooking kills the parasite. If you're using fresh herbs in hot dishes, cook them into the meal rather than sprinkling them raw on top.
5. There is no person to person transmission only through infected produce!
I hope this helps keep some of our local patients out of the clinic! Feel free to ask any general questions below, and I'll answer what I can.
