Have you volunteered with us before? How did that experience impact you? Please share!

Read about a recent experience of a volunteer member of our Board of Directors, Tricia Markoff, PhD seeing the work first hand in Kenya.

"Being a teacher, what fascinated me most was observing a Care Group. The Care Group volunteer is elected by the women of 10-12 households that have a pregnant mother or a child under 2. These trained volunteers build relationships, and I believe it is the trust in these women, a peer, that allows community members to embrace new educational material."

I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of Impact Global Health Alliance board members over the last couple of years at events to which I have been invited. At the annual meeting this past September, I happened to sit next to Tricia Markoff (DrPH), who

In rural Kenya, community-based care and trained health workers are changing what’s possible for mothers and newborns.

Since 2018, child deaths have declined by 85%, helping 231 children survive and families stay together. Because care is local and community-led, about 38 additional children survive each year. Thank you for being part of this work.

We are officially an awardee for Action for Women’s Health, a global open call funded by Pivotal Ventures and managed by Lever for Change.

This award reinforces the work we've been doing matters. The women we serve MATTER.

Our approach we've refined over 43 years is rooted in trust, shaped by those who know this terrain best, and is worth backing.

We cannot wait to move forward with more resources and renewed focus on the communities who've trusted us from the start.

Today in Calhuitz, Guatemala, Dr. Lawrence D**g from California is training over 100 health workers in Neonatal Resuscitation.

A year and a half ago, Dr. Lawrence read about our impact in a peer-reviewed journal and reached out to learn more. Since then, he’s taken time off work—at his own expense—to train alongside our partners and help strengthen care for newborns.

Neonatal death remains one of the leading causes of infant mortality. Training local clinicians in lifesaving skills like cord milking and neonatal resuscitation—along with simple but powerful tools like checklists and regular practice—ensures babies have the best chance to survive and thrive.

Imagine being a health worker in the mountains of Guatemala: limited power, limited water, limited staff—but limitless dedication. Dr. Lawrence’s message is simple and profound: excellence is possible, even here.

Through his leadership, hundreds of providers are gaining the skills and confidence to save newborn lives. This work strengthens Curamericas Guatemala as a true center of excellence—where nurses, midwives, and mothers alike learn to care for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Volunteers like Dr. Lawrence make this possible. Join us and be part of this movement to save lives. https://impactglobalhealthalliance.org/take-action/

Respectful care is a basic way to save lives and restore dignity.
For years, our programs have prioritized respectful maternal care, ensuring every woman is treated with compassion and dignity during childbirth.

Now the world is catching up. A new global guide launched by the World Health Organization and partners found that over 40% of women experience abuse or discrimination during labor or childbirth—including being shouted at, slapped, or restrained.

That’s why we’re so proud of our partners at Curamericas Guatemala, who just completed a 10-month certification program training 150+ health workers nationwide in respectful care.

This work is important: health workers are sharing with each other how to center the mother and the community. Demand is growing for training like this certification course. Plans for 2026 are already underway with Curamericas Guatemala being recognized as a national and global leader in community-driven maternal health.

How do you define “respectful care”?
Share your thoughts or stories below. Let’s keep this conversation—and this movement—growing.

Leading global health and development agencies today released a new first-of-its-kind implementation guide to help countries provide respectful, dignified care and eliminate mistreatment across maternal and newborn health services: Compendium on respectful maternal and newborn care.
