National Tattoo Day may be a newer celebration, but tattooing is an art form that’s been telling stories for thousands of years.

Archaeological discoveries show that ancient Egyptians practiced tattooing, and the legendary Ötzi the Iceman—found frozen in the Alps in 1991 and dating back to around 3250 B.C.—had an incredible 61 tattoos. Talk about a timeless tradition!

Hello, New York!
Did you know the first tattoo shop in the United States opened right here in New York City back in 1870? Due to health concerns tattooing was illegal from 1961 to 1997. When the ban ended in 1976, Fineline Tattoo started operating in secret and became a licensed store front in 1997.

In 1975, there were only about 40 tattoo artists across the entire country. By 1980, that number had grown to an estimated 5,000. Today, tattoo studios are woven into the fabric of communities everywhere—a true reflection of how this art form has become part of American culture.

Every tattoo carries a story: a memory, a milestone, a moment, or a piece of who we are. National Tattoo Day is the perfect excuse to ask a friend, “What’s the story behind your ink?” because every piece has one worth sharing.
