How long have those leftovers been in the refrigerator?

Food Safety Education Month is a good reminder that safely storing food is just as important as safely preparing it.

A few habits can help reduce the risk of foodborne illness:

❄️ Refrigerate perishable foods and leftovers promptly.
📅 Keep track of how long leftovers have been in the refrigerator.
🌡️ Make sure your refrigerator is keeping food properly chilled.
🔥 Reheat leftovers thoroughly before eating.
👃 And remember: Food can sometimes contain harmful bacteria even when it looks, smells, or tastes normal.

When in doubt, throw it out. It’s better to lose a few leftovers than risk getting sick.

Consider checking the refrigerator of an older family member or friend, too. A quick food-safety check can be a simple way to show you care.

Wellness Wednesday: Don’t forget to hydrate!

As the weather gets cooler, it can be easy to forget about drinking enough fluids. But staying hydrated is important all year long—especially as we get older.

Water helps your body function at its best and supports everything from digestion and circulation to energy and alertness.

A few simple ways to drink more throughout the day:

💧 Keep a water bottle or glass within easy reach.
🍋 Add lemon, lime, berries, or cucumber for a little flavor.
🥣 Remember that soups and other foods with a high water content can contribute to hydration.
⏰ Make drinking something part of your regular routine, such as having a glass with each meal.

This , raise a glass—to your health!

💙 You take care of them every day. What if you could receive support for the care you already provide?

Through Access Care Partners’ Adult Family Care program, eligible caregivers can receive a tax-free stipend for providing daily care to a family member or other individual who lives in their home.

And caregivers aren’t doing it alone. Access Care Partners provides an experienced care team, including a nurse and case manager, who gets to know you, understands your needs, and provides ongoing support.

To qualify, the person receiving care must:

🏠 Live in the caregiver’s home
💙 Have MassHealth Standard or CommonHealth
🧼 Need assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, or other personal care needs

As a nonprofit, Access Care Partners puts an emphasis on maximizing caregiver payments—not profits—and offers one of the highest stipend rates, with payments made twice each month.

Already caring for someone you love? See if Adult Family Care could support you, too. Visit us at accesscarepartners.org/afc

September is Food Safety Education Month!

Food safety is important at every age, but older adults can be at greater risk of serious illness from foodborne germs. That makes safe food handling an especially important part of healthy aging.

An easy way to remember the basics is to follow four simple steps:

🧼 Clean: Wash hands, surfaces, and utensils often.
🥩 Separate: Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs away from foods that are ready to eat.
🌡️ Cook: Cook foods thoroughly and use a food thermometer to make sure they reach a safe internal temperature.
❄️ Chill: Refrigerate perishable foods promptly and keep your refrigerator at a safe temperature.

A few simple habits in the kitchen can go a long way toward keeping you and the people you care about safe.

This Food Safety Education Month, remember: Clean. Separate. Cook. Chill.

More than a meal. More than a delivery.

For many older adults, having nutritious meals available at home can make a big difference in their ability to remain healthy and independent.

Access Care Partners’ Meals on Wheels program delivers nutritious meals directly to eligible individuals at home. But our drivers deliver something else that matters, too: a friendly face and a regular check-in. 💙

For someone who lives alone or has difficulty preparing meals, that knock on the door can be an important part of the day.

And Meals on Wheels can be a connection to even more support. If a need or concern arises, Access Care Partners can help connect individuals with other services and resources that may help them continue living safely at home.

🍽️ Could you or someone you care about benefit from Meals on Wheels? Contact Access Care Partners at 413.538.9020 or [email protected] to learn more.

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month!

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on something that can make a big difference in the lives of older adults: preventing falls before they happen.

Falls are not a normal or inevitable part of aging. There are practical steps we can all take to reduce fall risk and help ourselves and the people we care about stay safe, active, and independent.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing tips and information about:

🏠 Making your home safer
💪 Building strength and improving balance
👟 Choosing safer footwear
💊 Understanding how medications can affect fall risk
👀 Staying on top of vision and hearing
⚠️ Recognizing personal risk factors
💙 Maintaining confidence and independence

Fall prevention isn’t about limiting what you do—it’s about helping you keep doing the things you enjoy as safely and confidently as possible.

Follow along this month and share our posts with a friend, family member, or caregiver. Together, we can help spread the word that falls can be prevented!
