The 10-second anxiety trick nobody talks about 🎶

If you struggle with anxiety, you've probably been told to "just take a deep breath" more times than you can count.

But here's something most people don't know:

Humming may actually help calm your nervous system.

When you hum, the vibration stimulates areas connected to the vagus nerve, which plays an important role in your body's relaxation response. Humming also naturally lengthens your exhale, which can help signal safety to the brain and reduce some of the physical symptoms of anxiety.

Ever notice that people often hum while they're cooking, cleaning, gardening, rocking a baby, or even when they're feeling content and relaxed?

That may not be a coincidence.

The vibration, the slower breathing, and the rhythmic sound can all help support nervous system regulation.

So the next time you're feeling overwhelmed, try humming for one slow exhale. Or better yet, hum a few lines of your favorite song.

No special technique required. No perfect breathing pattern. Just hum.

🎶 Take a breath.
🎶 Hum your favorite tune.
🎶 Notice what changes.

Do your shoulders feel a little lower?

Does your jaw feel a little softer?

Does your body feel even 1% calmer?

Sometimes the simplest tools are the ones we overlook.

Update! We are back online 😊

⚠️ We Don’t Have Power!! ⚠️

Due to a motor vehicle accident affecting the Main Street area, we are currently without power, internet, and phone service.

Unfortunately, that means we're unable to access our systems, answer phones, return calls, or do much of anything that requires electricity. 😅

At the moment, we're operating on coffee, patience, and crossed fingers while we wait for services to be restored.

A quick explanation about our current waitlist process because I know it can feel frustrating sometimes. ❤️

At this time, Northern Light Counseling does have a waitlist across the practice. When you contact us, our front desk will explain the process and send over intake paperwork. That paperwork does need to be fully completed before we can officially place someone on the waitlist.

Why? Because insurance, availability, age, clinician specialties, level of care needed, and appointment type (daytime, evening, telehealth, in person, school-based, etc.) all play a role in placement and matching. Having paperwork completed ahead of time allows us to move much faster once an opening becomes available.

One of the hardest parts is that the exact timeframe for the waitlist is VERY difficult to predict because there are so many moving pieces behind the scenes. There unfortunately is not a “one size fits all” answer for wait times.

I know many of you have seen how aggressively we’ve been hiring lately, and please trust me when I say we are VERY aware of the waitlist and are actively trying to improve it every single day. We recently hired additional clinicians specifically to help increase evening appointment availability, which we know is one of the biggest needs right now.

We are also expanding into additional office space because we have completely outgrown our current offices. The need for mental health services in our area has increased tremendously, and while we are so grateful people are reaching out for support, it has also created longer wait times across the field.

Please also know that if someone is looking to be seen sooner, we are always happy to provide referrals to other trusted practices and providers who may have shorter wait times or more immediate availability.

Our team truly cares, and we are working very hard behind the scenes to continue growing while still providing quality, ethical, individualized care to every client we serve. ❤️

Honestly, many people are confused by this! Here’s the simplest breakdown:

💬 Therapists / Counselors (LPC, LAPC, LSW, LCSW, LMFT)
Provide ongoing support, therapy, coping skills, trauma treatment, emotional healing, and personal growth.

This can include:
• talk therapy
• EMDR
• play therapy
• sand tray
• art therapy
• family therapy
…and more.

Therapists can also diagnose and treat many mental health conditions. For more complex diagnostic clarification, formal testing, Autism evaluations, or certain assessments, we may refer out.

🔬 Psychologists (PsyD or PhD)
Specialize in psychological testing and evaluations.

Often used for:
• ADHD testing
• Autism evaluations
• learning difficulties
• diagnostic clarification
• school/work accommodations

💊 Psychiatrists / Psychiatric Providers (MD, DO, Psychiatric NP)
Medical providers who diagnose mental health conditions and manage medications.

They focus more on:
• medication management
• severe symptoms
• brain chemistry & biological factors

🤝 The truth? Many people benefit from using a combination of these supports together.

For example:
• therapist for weekly support
• psychologist for testing
• psychiatric provider for medication support

That’s incredibly common and often works really well.

✨ If you’re unsure where to start, therapy is often a great first step. A good therapist can help guide you toward additional support if needed.

Mental health care is not one-size-fits-all. Different providers simply play different roles on the same team. ❤️
