Our habits quietly shape the direction of our life.
The thoughts we repeat, the patterns we reinforce, the things we consume, avoid, indulge, or return to daily—all leave impressions in the mind.

Over time, those impressions become grooves.
And those grooves become tendencies.
Eventually, tendencies become the lens through which we experience ourselves and the world.

The tools of yoga help us work directly with the mind and nervous system. They help loosen old patterns while creating new inner pathways rooted in steadiness, clarity, compassion, and purpose.

Little by little, new grooves are formed.

What once drained us can begin to lose its hold.
What once felt difficult can begin to feel natural.
And the direction of our energy starts to change.

What we practice… we become.

Simhasana — Lion Pose — is more than a dramatic exhale or a playful roar. Beneath the physical movement is a deeper energetic process.

This practice awakens the throat, jaw, tongue, eyes, diaphragm, pelvic floor, and subtle channels connected to expression, containment, and inner awareness. In some ta***ic traditions, the tongue reaching upward helps develop sensitivity around the talu chakra — an important energetic gateway linked to the subtle dimensions of the mind.

The pose asks the whole body to participate at once:
grounding through the pelvic floor,
lifting through the spine and heart,
activating the throat,
focusing the gaze,
and releasing sound from deep within.

When practiced with awareness, Simhasana becomes a way of directing energy inward and upward — helping the mind move beyond its ordinary patterns into subtler states of perception.

It is both activating and releasing.
Powerful and playful.
A reminder that yoga is not only stretching the body, but refining awareness itself.

"It is hard to imagine the valleys of western Tibet. Edged by towering mountains on every side, these lands are home to ranging herds of yak and flocks of sheep as well as to the nomadic families who tend them. Undomesticated animals also share the valley terrain. Antelope, goats, a burly marmot (obsessed with digging holes), and tiny rodents scurrying from place to place appear abruptly and as suddenly
disappear. Crows and other birds have a presence There as well, and there are fish in the near-icy streams that cross the valley floors......

Present yet not present. Unseen yet remembered. Above yet below. The yogic ideal of nonattachment revealed itself at Dolma La as an experience of love-in-separation. Looking out from this high pass made one aware of the inevitable separateness of one person from another. And the exertion required to reach the pass only amplified the feeling
of remoteness. But a deeper lesson seemed also to emerge. It was that love conquers separation without disturbing it. In love, the natural
separations of life are transcended by a union of spirit, and the dancing flags, their blessings blowing out into the wind, gave colorful form to that truth. "

Several key institutions helped bring yoga from India to the United States. The Vedanta Society, founded by Swami Vivekananda, helped pave the way for Eastern wisdom in the West. Self-Realization Fellowship, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, introduced Kriya Yoga to countless seekers. Integral Yoga Institute, founded by Swami Satchidananda, made a broad cultural impact through its teachings on yoga and holistic living. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, established by Swami Vishnudevananda, helped spread the classical teachings of yoga throughout the West.

And then came Himalayan Institute, founded by Swami Rama in the 1970s. Today, the Himalayan Institute continues to thrive as a leading authority in yogic wisdom, meditation, and philosophy—preserving and sharing the depth of the Himalayan Tradition for modern practitioners around the world.

Did you know? We offer hundreds of hours of classes featuring Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, PhD, Ishan Tigunait, Sandy Anderson, and many other highly qualified teachers of the tradition. These teachings are readily available online—and many of them are free! Just DM us with any questions on how to connect.

Before the mountains. Before the ocean. Before the first breath.

There was Hiranyagarbha — the golden womb of creation, holding all that would ever be.

Prajapati Sukta is the Vedic hymn that draws us back to this origin and introduces us to Prajapati, the progenitor. This July, join Pandit Rajmani Tigunait for an in-depth study of these ten profound mantras and their power to restore our connection with the Creator and her Creation.
