While in Bali last year I was so thankful & happy to find Wayan, a traditional batik artist who kindly walked me through the elaborate art of batik from his home. Of course I incorporated my favorite Mandala Mehndi style flowers. Wayan encouraged me with his limited english, to not over think and to let the design flow through me naturally. The process was meditative as I learned to work with the new medium of hot wax, powder dyes and solutions. My love & respect for traditional Indonesian batik grew as I discovered the steady hand & timely multi-step dye process required. The technique is very similar to applying henna onto the skin. We broke the process down to a few hours over a course of two days. If only I had more time to explore the lovely art of my Indonesian ancestors. I am comforted in the knowledge that I will most definitely return for more. The best souvenirs are indeed experience.

For International Women's Day I would like to honor these two extraordinary women, Tara and her daughter Kamali Moon. Tara is a Midwife & educator, a maker of healing natural salves and tonics, a Hawaiian Lomi practitioner, a Theatrical Arts performer, a Mother of two, Wife to an amazing man, and one of my most treasured friends. Tara is instrumental in changing the way women live and birth here on the islands by educating, supporting and leading women to birth safe & naturally. A special gift of Henna in celebration of her own first born. Happy Blessed life Kamali, I am in awe of the beauty you are, and the exceptional woman you too are becoming. Honor life's passing moments with the gift of henna. 🌿
