Every month, we celebrate the heart and soul of Drums Alive, our incredible instructors who bring rhythm, movement, and genuine human connection to communities around the world.
This series is all about the stories behind the beats: the moments that inspire, the journeys that unfold, and the communities that form when passionate instructors create joyful spaces for people to move together.
This month, we're honored to introduce you to an instructor whose decade of dedication shows what true inclusion looks like in practice. Her classes span community centers, senior centers, and specialized programs, and her message is clear: movement, music, and community are for every body.
🥁 This Month's Spotlight: Kelly Sipe
In Massachusetts, Drums Alive instructor Kelly Sipe is proving every day that movement, music, and community are for every body. For the past 10 years, she has been bringing FUN, IMPACTFUL, and UNIQUE experiences to adults 50+ across community centers, senior centers, 55+ communities, and specialty programs for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and dementia.
Teaching With Heart And Lived Experience
Kelly was inspired to become a Drums Alive instructor because she wanted to teach fitness to people with limited abilities. She understands those challenges personally and proudly shares that she also has limited abilities and still absolutely thrives when she is teaching others to be active. That real-life empathy is at the core of every class she leads.
What began as an idea to teach mostly online or in one location has grown into a powerful hybrid model. Kelly now teaches online and travels to multiple sites each week, meeting participants where they are and making Drums Alive accessible to a wide range of abilities and needs.
A Full Schedule, A Full Heart
Each week, Kelly leads nine Drums Alive classes: a mix of Golden Beats, regular classes, and adaptive sessions each month. Her classes reach people in 55+ communities, community and senior centers, and specialized groups like Parkinson's and memory care participants, as well as special events for schools, towns, and private businesses.
What keeps her going year after year? The participants. Their stories, their progress, their joy, and their courage are what fuel her passion to keep showing up, drumsticks in hand.
Participants Who Show Up For Each Other
Kelly loves that her participants are so much fun and deeply appreciative of the opportunity to be active. They love the social aspect of class just as much as the movement: seeing each other, catching up, and feeling part of a welcoming community.
She hears often how inclusive and inviting her classes feel. Participants tell her how much they value the way she makes everyone feel like they belong, no matter their limitations or experience level. Those comments and the smiles that come with them are constant reminders of why her work matters.
Real Impact On Body, Mind, And Spirit
Over the years, Kelly has watched Drums Alive help her participants improve both physically and mentally. They share how their strength, mobility, and confidence have grown, along with their mood and mindset. By creating a social, non-judgmental environment and encouraging everyone to "do what they can," she removes pressure and replaces it with joy and possibility.
Her adaptive approach allows each person to participate at their own level, whether that means modifying movements, staying seated, or taking breaks as needed. The result is a safe, uplifting space where progress is celebrated in all its forms.
Looking Ahead: More Formats, More Reach
Kelly is excited about the future of Drums Alive and the opportunity to expand into even more formats so she can reach more people. She also looks forward to building a stronger online presence to connect with participants who may not have access to in-person classes but still crave movement, music, and community.
Her advice to new Drums Alive instructors is bold and encouraging: JUST DO IT. Do not wait for your class to be perfect. Your participants do not know or care if you make a mistake. They just want you there, present, real, and enjoying the class with them.
