Every traditional Japanese backpiece begins with a vision—but it comes to life through purpose, patience, and respect for the tradition.
This custom design by Horiyume brings together two iconic symbols of Japanese Irezumi: the Oni and the Koi.
The Oni represents the strength to confront adversity, transform hardship into wisdom, and overcome the demons we all face in life. While often misunderstood, the Oni is also viewed as a powerful guardian, reminding us that growth is born through challenge.
Swimming beneath it, the Koi symbolizes perseverance, determination, and the courage to continue moving forward despite life’s strongest currents. In Japanese folklore, the koi’s relentless journey upstream represents the pursuit of becoming something greater through discipline and resilience.
Together, these elements create a powerful narrative: the courage to face life’s obstacles and the determination to rise above them.
This is the essence of authentic Japanese Irezumi—every design is more than decoration. Every element is chosen with intention, and every tattoo tells a story unique to the person who wears it.

Tradition Can’t Be Rushed.
In a world where everything moves faster, Tebori remains a reminder that true craftsmanship takes time.
Tebori is the traditional Japanese method of tattooing by hand—a technique that has been practiced for generations and continues to be respected for its artistry, precision, and connection to Japanese tattoo history. Every movement is intentional, every session is personal, and every tattoo reflects a tradition that has been preserved through dedicated artists.
While modern tattoo machines are an incredible tool, Tebori offers a different experience. It isn’t about choosing one method over the other—it’s about honoring a centuries-old art form that still has a place in authentic Japanese Irezumi today.
For many large-scale Japanese projects, I combine machine tattooing with Tebori when appropriate, allowing each technique to do what it does best while staying true to the traditions of Japanese tattooing.

We’ve been working on Tyson’s traditional Japanese Irezumi bodysuit for more than 10 years, with every session bringing the story one step closer to completion. Large-scale Japanese tattooing is a journey, and the result is a masterpiece built through patience and perseverance.
In this video, Horiyume is practicing the traditional art of Tebori (Japanese hand tattooing), a technique that has been passed down through generations of Japanese tattoo masters. This completed Japanese Irezumi dragon chest piece was custom designed and tattooed by Tattoo Adam at 434 Tattoo in the heart of Waikīkī, Hawaiʻi.
In traditional Japanese tattooing, the dragon is a symbol of wisdom, strength, courage, and protection. Unlike many Western depictions, the Japanese dragon is a benevolent guardian that represents balance, perseverance, and the ability to overcome life’s greatest challenges.
Every scale, cloud, and flowing line was carefully designed to complement the client’s anatomy, creating a timeless piece that will continue to tell its story for a lifetime. This is what authentic custom Irezumi is all about—art with purpose, history, and meaning.
