Most back pain isn’t a back problem.

You have probably tried stretching it. You might have rested it, iced it, or even seen a doctor who told you everything looks fine on paper. But your back still hurts.

The pain is in your back, but the problem might not be.

When’s the last time anyone actually checked your hips?

Your body is a connected system. If your hips are tight, or your iliopsoas is shortened from sitting at a desk all day, those muscles pull directly on your lumbar spine. Your lower back is just the victim in that scenario. It is doing all the
screaming, but it isn’t the one causing the trouble.

If you only treat the back, you are only treating the symptom. You have to find the source.

Follow for more real talk on pain that actually makes sense.

How I get your nervous system to finally let its guard down.

When you’re on the table, I spend a lot of time doing highly targeted, specific work on your neck, shoulders, and upper back. That work’s necessary, but it can be intense.

During that part of the treatment, your nervous system’s on high alert. It’s paying close attention to every trigger point we hit. It’s deciding whether it needs to protect you. If I go above a six or a seven on the pain scale, your body will lock down. If your body locks down, I can’t get in and do my job, and you don’t heal.

So, once that targeted work is done, I do something very specific.

I do four to five deep, long, smooth strokes using both hands, running all the way from the base of your neck down to your sacrum.

This is usually the moment clients let out a huge sigh of relief. Why does it feel so satisfying?

It’s the “all clear” signal.

It tells your brain the intense, localized work is over. It’s a massive safety signal that allows the nervous system to stop bracing and fully exhale. It physically connects the upper and lower halves of your body, flushing the tissue we just worked on and reminding your body that it works as one connected system.

It takes your body from a state of guarding to completely letting go. That’s when the real, lasting relief sets in.

Because massage therapy isn’t just about rubbing muscles. It’s healthcare. And the goal’s to help you feel better in your body.

Save this post as a reminder that healing isn’t just about digging into knots - it’s about teaching your body it’s safe to relax.
