82 years later, and they're still not home ⚓️

Today, we mark the anniversary of the West Loch Disaster - a tragedy long held in the shadows of history. This year, we choose to do more than simply "remember"; we choose to remain proactive in recognizing the soldiers that are still unaccounted for. We are fighting to ensure the sacrifice of the soldiers lost within West Loch, stand with the same dignity as the USS Arizona, and the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Their service is no less critical, and their loss is no less sacred. As we honor them, we also confront the perpetual erasure of the very history they've built. At a time when sacred sites are being commodified for "VIP" leisure, and "affordable housing", like the humble Quonset huts and Little Makalapa housing, that sheltered the segregated units of Black, Hawaiian, Filipino, and Indigenous servicemen are being bulldozed into oblivion and obsolescence. That is not progress - it is the literal destruction of the economical footprint of our marginalized communities.

Today's remembrance is not an act of resistance, but an act of defense and protection. By gathering together as a community, we firmly declare that our history is not for sale, nor will it be erased. We stand up for those who were forgotten, we defend the truth of their service, and we ensure that their stories remain woven into the fabric of our nations. We have not let West Loch be erased. 🕊️

History isn't just in the books; it’s right here in our own harbor. Before the tragedy of 1944, West Loch was a literal powderkeg—packed tight with fuel, explosives, and the pressure of a looming invasion.

The West Loch Disaster was a catastrophic chain reaction, that changed our shores forever. It's a story of incredible danger, and the brave men of the segregated units who carried the weight of the war’s most hazardous tasks.

History often forgets that the most dangerous work fell to segregated units, who labored in these conditions with little recognition. Their sacrifice is woven into the very fabric of our harbor. Join us this year as we honor the men who carried that burden and ensure their story is finally heard by our community.
