Doing nervous system work and suddenly symptoms show up? Before you panic and blame the tool, try one of these: “My nervous system isn’t sure it’s safe to drop the danger signal yet.” or “This is my system unlocking energy, moving through the sympathetic ladder.” and maybe most importantly: “I’m learning to allow the symptoms as a way of building capacity in my nervous system.” We often think that we should always have a ‘feel better’ response from doing this work. There are infinite biochemical changes happening, and regulation is non-linear. The body heals often with a bumpy ride. Most importantly, try to do the work to get your symptoms to change. Do this work to build the capacity to be with your symptoms and other life triggers while a lower alarm signal plays in the background. The goal is to reduce the danger alarm in the background WHILE your body is doing what it does- healing in its own timing.

📌 Save this to come back to the next time you have a symptom flare after doing the work.

Nobody’s telling you to just lie about your situation. Yes you have hard days or maybe its been hard years at this point. But the identity that walks alongside you matters. How do you identify yourself to others? Your nervous system is always listening to the story you introduce yourself with. For example, “I’m a Lymie”, or “I’m a long-hauler” versus “I’m someone healing from immune dysregulation” are two very different instructions to a body that takes you literally. Take note of the first few sentences you use when you meet someone new and decide to tell them about what you are dealing with. Make sure there’s still room in that story for the version of you that gets better.

Is there a label that you’ve let find you that is no longer serving who you are trying to become in the future?”

Back in 2017–2018, I was teaching brain retraining while I was still having dysautonomia spells and mold reactions. I remember thinking, who am I to teach this when I’m not fully recovered? My practitioner told me something I never forgot: “You’re so much farther down the road than the people you’re helping. You have so much wisdom.” The caveat — I had to work within my capacity, not push through it. If you’re waiting to be 100% healed before you start showing up, you might be waiting on the wrong finish line.

I’ve watched people go from bedbound to walking again in a weekend. Not from a supplement. Not from a $500 IV drip and a stack of fifty pills a month. From understanding.

I have zero patience for the corner of this industry that sells you complexity because simple doesn’t look impressive on a sales page. Your nervous system isn’t waiting on the next 12-week cellular detox protocol. It’s waiting to stop being confused about what’s actually happening to it. Sounds too simple to be true. That’s exactly why education outruns most protocols in restoring your energy, because when you understand what’s actually been driving the symptoms, a deep relief sets in and your safety switch finally clicks in. Why? When our brain is convinced the 5 alarm fire it was sensing was just a faulty alarm that you don’t have to panic about, the whole system shifts. Not always in a weekend, but it does happen that way for some. We see this in retreat settings, healing conferences, brain retraining workshops, etc. For most, this understanding takes a while to sink in, true, but the principle remains the same. Turn off the alarm signal reverberating through the body, and the body will present with a more balanced immune response, mitochondrial signaling to thrive comes back online, and digestive fire returns.

If you’re ready to understand your operating system, comment MASTERCLASS and I’ll walk you through it.

I still have hard days.

I’m perimenopausal.

I travel more than my body always likes.

And some weeks it still throws things at me that I did not order.

People love to catch me in a flare like it’s a gotcha. “Wait, you teach this stuff, and you’re still struggling?”

Yes, sometimes.

Knowing how to regulate my nervous system in a sh*tstorm never bought me immunity from being a human woman in an aging body.

It bought me capacity and speed.

What used to take months to move through now takes days, sometimes less.

That’s the whole prize.

Not immunity from suffering, not a body that never misbehaves again- just a faster way back to myself through having more capacity to stay present and out of alarm in the midst of a struggle.

Are you ready for this too? Comment MASTERCLASS and I’ll walk you through how it can become your reality.

I watch people turn nervous system work into the same grind they used with biohacks and dieting.

Track it, perfect it, stack five more tools on top of it. Still can’t sit still with your discomfort on a Tuesday when nothing’s wrong.

This is the trap nobody warns you about once you start healing.

You go from being an expert at fixing your body to being an expert at fixing your nervous system, and it’s the same addiction (escapism through fixing) now with a better HRV, maybe.

Breathwork before bed, cold plunge in the morning, a somatic release between meetings- none of it is wrong; all of it is useless if you’re just using it to outrun a feeling instead of learning to sit in one.

Capacity gets built by staying in the room when it’s uncomfortable, not by getting really good at leaving.

You don’t need a longer protocol list. You need to survive one regular hard Tuesday without reaching for anything.

What’s one thing you reached for to escape your discomfort, instead of being present with it?👇

For years I thought I just had a fast personality- fast talker, fast walker, always three steps ahead of my own sentence.

Now I see I wasn’t just a ‘go-getter’. Rather, these traits were a flight response with the appearance of being productive and driven.

Slowing down was never peaceful for me.

It felt uncomfortable and exposing.

The second I actually stopped, I could feel everything I’d been outrunning- the ache, the fear, all the body stuff I didn’t have room for at full speed.

My whole system had learned somewhere along the way that speed was safety and stillness was exposure, so it kept me moving long after moving stopped making any real sense.

Telling yourself to “just slow down” doesn’t usually work.

You are having to override deep protection patterns.

Slowing down, for me, started by practicing talking and moving 15% slower. Not too much, just enough to take the edge off.

That practice created a pattern interrupt where I started to actually feel the tiger that I was running from internally.

From there deeper somatic practices like we teach in module 5 of our level 1 program brought me into more stillness and safety.

I still have to catch the old rushing pattern as my go-to survival strategy, but now I can be with the feeling of vulnerability that accompanies slowing down.

This is a huge part of healing for those of us with overly type-A driven survival strategies.

If you read this and recognized yourself, the pattern usually goes deeper than pace.
