Yes, we are skilled practitioners.
People come to us for our skill, our experience, our eye and our expertise.

And also…

They come to us as humans.
I think there’s freedom in letting our artistry be something we do, not something we have to be.

Less proving.
Less taking it personally.
More room for the actual human sitting in our chair.

I noticed my station last night before I left the salon. Really noticed it.
The oracle decks, the feather, the lighter, all these personal and relational things that have slowly made their way into my space.

And I started thinking about how different this is from how I understood “professional” earlier in my career.
Wear black.
Keep your personal things separate.
Keep yourself separate.
It’s all about the guest.

And yes… it IS about the guest.
But I question the idea that being professional means removing yourself from the room.

I think our industry has gotten really good at teaching us how to look professional.
How to present.
How to perform.
How to keep things polished and separate.
But we haven’t spent nearly as much time talking about the relational part of the work.

And there’s a cost to that.
When professionalism becomes linked to being neutral, polished and separate, we can start valuing the performance of professionalism more than the actual relationship happening in the chair.

HAIRDRESSING IS RELATIONAL.

There are two people in the room.
Nervous systems, stories, boundaries, trust, intuition, conversation, silence… A LOT happens beyond the haircut.

And if professionalism means staying separate, I wonder if we’re teaching stylists to hide one of the most important things they bring to the work:

THEIR HUMANITY

This isn’t about oversharing or making the guest responsible for us.
Boundaries matter a lot.

But a boundary doesn’t have to mean distance or hiding. It can simply mean knowing what’s mine, what’s yours, and not confusing the two.

I don’t believe that professionalism is about leaving yourself at the door.

I believe it’s about bringing myself into the room without making the room about me.
I can be connected without getting tangled and I can hold space without disappearing.

It’s been years since we sailed.
We were in our 20s when we had our first sailing era, and apparently Jamie’s sailing bug never really went away. It just took a little nap. 😂

Living this close to the Columbia and suddenly Captain Jamie has entered the chat.

He sails.
I enjoy the view.
Honestly, I feel like I got the better job. ⛵️

It was time to go even shorter.
And her inner 16 year old said ABSOLUTELY.

I love that hair can give us a way to play with all the different versions of ourselves.
The ones we’ve been.
The ones we still are.
The ones who occasionally come stomping back into the room like, “YES. THIS.”

And this video pretty much sums up the whole vibe.
We thought we were taking a cute little photo together.

I love that we caught the moment instead of posing for it.

Four years at Ritual. ❤️🥳
I spent this morning thinking a lot about this anniversary and about the journey of finding the right space for me.

When I made my big move, there was so much sifting and sorting around where I would work next. I was trying to figure out what felt right, where I belonged, and what kind of space could actually hold the way I wanted to work.

There were places where I felt myself getting constricted. Like I needed to make myself, or the way I offer my work, fit into what was already there.

And then there was Ritual.

Lacy created this space that somehow gave me room to just be me. To work in the way that feels natural to me. To keep growing and changing and figuring things out along the way.

And Ritual itself… it really is the sweetest, warmest hug for your whole self… straight from Lacy’s heart.
There’s something about being there… it’s openness … it’s curves… it’s warmth… and it’s light…creates space for you to exhale.
You can walk in as you are.
You don’t have to be anything other than yourself.

This has been about so much more than hair. It’s been about finding my way into my own work, trusting what feels true to me, and letting the craft and the human connection live right alongside each other.

Lacy, I’m so grateful you made room for me. For trusting me, believing in me, letting me grow and change, and for being my friend through all of it. You are pure magic sweet sister.✨🫶

So here’s to four years of Ritual 🥹…

to laugh & dance,
make beautiful things,
change your hair,
adorn yourself,
be weird,
be hopeful,
be alive.

You don’t have to carry the whole world every minute.
