Advanced radiation oncology is available right here in the Bayou Region. πŸ’œ

In our latest blog, Dr. Rockne Hymel, radiation oncologist at Terrebonne General Health System | Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, shares how patients in Houma can access sophisticated radiation treatment options close to home, including SBRT and SRS, without routinely traveling to larger cities for care.

Dr. Hymel also discusses how advances in treatment planning, technology and AI are helping radiation oncology become more precise and efficient while supporting individualized care.

For patients and families, having advanced treatment nearby can mean less time on the road and more time focused on care, recovery and the people who matter most.

A strong turnout and an important step toward early detection. πŸ’œ

At this year’s Barbershop Bash Bayou in Morgan City, we provided 90 free colorectal and prostate cancer screenings, and 20% of those screened had never been screened before.

Hosted at Skinner’s Barbershop, the event brought cancer screening directly into the community alongside biometric screenings, health vendors, food, music and family-friendly activities.

Thank you to everyone who came out, encouraged someone to get screened or helped make the day possible. Reaching people where they are can make an important difference in helping more individuals take charge of their health.

Advanced technology can change the way cancer is treated. Human connection can change the way that treatment is experienced. πŸ’œ

In a recent feature from NOLA.com, Patrick Dunne shares how both became central to his cancer journey at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

After concerning symptoms led him to Dr. Scott Delacroix, urologic oncologist at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Metairie, Patrick learned his cancer was advanced and would require a specialized treatment approach. Dr. Delacroix helped guide him through his options, including treatment with the Elekta Unity MRI-guided adaptive radiation therapy system in Baton Rouge.

But alongside that advanced care came something just as memorable, the relationships Patrick built with the team around him.

From conversations about opera and fashion to small moments of encouragement during treatment, Patrick found a level of connection that helped make a difficult experience feel deeply personal.

Today, he is in remission and sharing his story so others facing cancer know what comprehensive care can look like.

When Paul Miller learned he had prostate cancer, he found a team at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Covington that helped him feel confident about what came next. But when he looks back on his experience, it's not only the treatment he remembers...
It's Dr. Elson taking the time to listen. His nurse, Brianna, answering his questions. And Roy in guest services greeting him with a kindness that made difficult days feel a little easier.

β€œWhen you’re going in for treatment, you’re worried and anxious and you’re scared,” Paul said. β€œAnd Roy just had this really profound effect on me.”

Paul's story reminds us that expert cancer care is about more than the treatment itself. It's also about the people who help you feel cared for along the way. πŸ™Œ

What a meaningful way to celebrate 55 years of mission, generosity and impact. πŸ’œ

This past Sunday, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center hosted IGNITE, our inaugural brunch celebrating the extraordinary role philanthropy plays in helping us improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer.

Surrounded by longtime supporters, friends and partners, we reflected on the vision first set in motion by our founders, Anna B. Lipsey and Dr. M.J. Rathbone, Jr., a belief that every person facing cancer should have access to exceptional care close to home.

That vision continues today because of the generosity of those who invest in our mission and help make advanced treatment, early detection, research, education and support possible for patients and families across the region.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for IGNITE and to all who continue helping carry this legacy forward!

πŸ“Έ Take a look at a few moments from a very special afternoon.

If you’d like to help carry this mission forward, learn more about ways to invest in Mary Bird Perkins at the link in the first comment.

A cancer diagnosis can come with a lot of questions. You don't have to find every answer on your own. 🫢

At Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, patient navigation is an important part of how we care for patients and families. Our navigation team includes registered nurses, social workers and dietitians dedicated to helping patients overcome barriers and access the medical and psychosocial support they need.

That can mean answering questions, coordinating care, arranging transportation, connecting patients with specialists and support services, and helping families understand what comes next.

From pre-diagnosis through treatment and survivorship, our navigators are there to help make the path forward feel a little clearer. ❀️ It's another way we're working to provide comprehensive cancer care centered around each individual patient.

When you give, your impact stays right here at home. ❀️

Consider donating on GIVE DAY, our annual 24-hour day of giving. Your gift helps provide critical support for local patients and families, from transportation to treatment, wigs and head coverings, patient navigation and social work services, free community cancer screenings, financial assistance, and other essential care needs.

Best of all, every gift made stays right here in the Bayou Region, helping your friends and neighbors.

55 years of caring for our communities. One day to help carry that mission forward. ❀️

Today is GIVE DAY at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, our annual 24-hour day of giving.

In honor of 55 years since our first clinic opened its doors, we're asking our community to consider a gift of $55 to the Mission Fund. πŸŽ—οΈ

Your generosity helps remove barriers and provide patients support where they need it most. Gifts to the Mission Fund help provide transportation to treatment, wigs and head coverings, patient navigation and social work services, free community cancer screenings, financial assistance and other essential care needs.

When you give, you're helping ease a worry or lift a burden so patients can focus on what matters most: their care and healing. πŸ™
