Surgical terms can sound complicated… until you break them down.

Know the root, and the word suddenly makes sense.

-tomy (to cut into)
Laminotomy – cutting into the lamina to relieve nerve pressure

-ectomy (to remove)
Laminectomy / Discectomy – removal of bone or disc to decompress the spine

-ostomy (to create an opening)
Ventriculostomy – surgical opening into a brain ventricle to drain fluid

-plasty (to reshape or reconstruct)
Vertebroplasty / Kyphoplasty – stabilizing or restoring a fractured vertebra

-pexy (to fix in place)
Nephropexy – surgical fixation of a floating kidney

-scopy (to look / examine)
Spinal endoscopy – examining the spinal canal with a camera

-rrhaphy (to sew together)
Neurorrhaphy – surgical repair of a severed nerve by stitching

One of the biggest lessons I learned early in my career wasn’t clinical.

It was leadership.

Medical school and surgical training teach us how to treat patients.

Almost none of us are taught how to lead a team.

If you don’t set clear expectations early, your team will set them for you.

Leadership isn’t about control.

It’s about building a culture of respect, accountability, and professionalism.

In our practice, everyone calls me Dr. Cyr. Not Steve.

Even the people who have been with me the longest.

That title isn’t ego.

It’s a boundary—and it protects the culture we’ve built.

An exceptional surgeon needs more than technical skill.

Compassion. Emotional intelligence. The ability to listen. Clear communication.

When tension shows up in the office, don’t let it sit.

Address it.

Small problems become big ones when ignored—and patients feel it.

Your team has to stay aligned behind one mission: deliver the highest level of care possible.

Being kind does not mean avoiding hard conversations.

As a busy spine surgeon, my days are filled with complex cases, long hours in the OR, and the constant responsibility of people’s lives and mobility. It’s easy for the calendar to fill with everything except the people who matter most.

That’s why date night isn’t optional for me — it’s non-negotiable.

I’m fortunate to have a devoted, patient, and understanding wife who has supported this demanding life for years. Even so, I know the work will always try to crowd her out if I let it. Protecting intentional time together — whether it’s a quiet dinner or simply putting the phones away and talking — is one of the most important things I do.

The operating room demands precision and focus. So does a marriage. Both require intentional investment, and both suffer when you start running on empty.

To every physician, entrepreneur, or high-achiever reading this: the work will always be there. The people who love you won’t wait forever for the version of you that shows up present and whole.

Protect the date night. It’s one of the smartest things you can do for your long-term performance — and for the life you’re actually working for.
