*Our people in foreign lands*

Dear Family

I dont know the author of this piece, but it is very instructive and i thought you can pick up the wisdom herein.
Cheers

AFRICAN DIASPORA:

KNOW WHEN TO GO HOME

A good visitor knows when to go home.
A good dancer leaves the stage when the ovation is loudest.

There is dignity in arrival, but there is wisdom in departure.

To travel in search of greener pastures is not a crįmē; it has never been. Our fathers traded across deserts and seas. Our mothers crossed rivers for sůrviv@l. Movement is in our blöōd. But something has gone terribly wrong when the journey meant to be temporary becomes a lifetime of postponement, when grey hair announces itself loudly and still there is no plan, no vision, no roadmap, to return home.

At that point, the question must be asked: What exactly are we still searching for?

Do not be the fowl that saw grains on the roadside and kept feeding, forgetting the trap, until it ended up in a pot of soup. Opportunity without timing becomes regret. Comfort without purpose becomes a cage. Staying too long in another man’s land eventually turns the guest into an invisible stranger, neither fully accepted there nor fully present at home.

Your sweat abroad was never meant to only pay rent and bills until old age. It was seed money. Seed money is not for storage; it is for planting. And planting is best done in soil that knows your name.

Africa is not meant to be a retirement cemetery, a place where coffins arrive but ideas never return. Our motherland should not only receive our remains; she deserves our strength, our wisdom, our capital, our experience, while we are still alive enough to give them meaning.

Look carefully at your children. They speak your language with an accent or not at all. They know foreign holidays but not ancestral festivals. They recognize cartoon characters but cannot name their uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces. Their Africanness is thinning, quietly slipping away, not because they are bad children, but because identity needs proximity to survive.

Culture is not preserved by memory alone; it is transmitted by presence. Values are not downloaded; they are lived. The social cord that once held us together: community, extended family, shared responsibility, is weakening, not by force, but by distance.

Ask yourself honestly:
If you don’t go home now, when will you?
When your legs are weak?
When your energy is gone?
When your relevance has expired?

A wise man does not wait for applause to fade before exiting the stage. A wise woman does not abandon her roots for the illusion of endless comfort. The purpose of going out was never to disappear. It was to learn, earn, return, and rebuild.

Go home while you still have vision.
Go home while your hands are still strong.
Go home while your children can still adapt.

Africa does not need pity; she needs participation. She does not need our tears at funerals; she needs our investments, our institutions, our leadership, our courage, now.

The pasture was never the destination. It was the preparation. Cut it. Package it. Digest it. Then return home and feast, not alone, but with your people.

Which way, African people?
The road back home is still open, but it does not wait forever.
