The most wild thing I’ve ever done? I caught my own baby. On purpose.
We were living in the countryside of Jamaica. I was pregnant with my fifth baby and the midwife wanted $3000 USD. I told her upfront our budget couldn’t stretch that far. So, I declined her service.
A few weeks later, she insisted we still hire her. “Don’t let money be an issue,” she said. Then she wanted to barter. Tried to tell me what I should give her—drive an hour and a half each way to teach dance classes after giving birth.
She had me fu**ed up.
Then she didn’t even want to come to our home for the birth. Instead, she wanted us to drive to Kingston, rent an Airbnb, and have the baby there.
HUH?
I knew something was up when my car shut completely OFF while we were driving to her for a routine checkup. The universe was speaking. That arrangement got canceled.
She called me disrespectful. By that time, I’d already made up my mind.
I was gonna catch my own baby.
My husband was terrified. He wanted to make sure we were safe. So we registered at the closest hospital, went to the appointments, asked all the questions. I didn’t like their answers about how and where I could labor, but I nodded in agreement anyway.
My baby wanted me to be bold and brave. I could feel it.
I started visualizing exactly how I would labor and birth her. I did this over and over until the day came.
The night of the blue super moon (August 2024), I went into labor.
I quietly rode the waves of each contraction while my husband and children slept. I wanted to be alone, present. The room was dark. I timed the contractions to gauge my progress. Eventually I woke my husband up, and he supported me through our labor.
Then my water broke. He loaded me into the car. I could barely move—baby girl was crowning.
We made it halfway to the hospital when she emerged.
I felt everything.
I reached down to trace around her tiny head, making sure the cord wasn’t around her neck. After 8 hours of labor, I gave birth to our little princess in the back of my car, right into my hands, under the light of the blue super moon.
I trusted my body. I trusted the universe. I trusted myself.
