Why Are My Hands or Feet Numb After a Car Accident?

Numbness or tingling in your hands, arms, legs, or feet after a car accident may be related to irritation or injury involving the nerves, neck, or lower back.

Even if your ER X-rays were normal, symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness, neck pain, back pain, or pain traveling into an arm or leg may require further evaluation.

I’m Dr. Hamel at Kingwood Chiropractic Spine and Injury Center. With more than 25 years of experience and advanced training in spinal trauma and MRI, I evaluate car accident and whiplash injuries to help determine what may be causing these symptoms and whether additional testing may be appropriate.

Why Does Sitting Make My Back Hurt More After a Car Accident?

If your back pain gets worse when you sit after a car accident, there may be a reason.

Sitting can increase stress on the lower back and may aggravate injured muscles, joints, ligaments, or spinal discs. After a collision, prolonged sitting, especially while driving or working at a computer, may make pain, stiffness, or even symptoms into the buttock or leg more noticeable.

And remember: a normal X-ray does not rule out every type of injury. X-rays are useful for evaluating bones and alignment, but injuries involving discs and other soft tissues may require a different evaluation or imaging when clinically indicated.

At Kingwood Chiropractic Spine and Injury Center, Dr. Tyler Hamel has 25+ years of chiropractic experience with advanced training in spinal trauma and MRI. We evaluate not only where you hurt, but how the accident has affected everyday activities like sitting, driving, working, bending, lifting, and sleeping.

If sitting has become painful since your car accident, don’t just assume it will go away on its own.

Schedule a car accident injury evaluation and find out what may be contributing to your pain.

The ER said my X-rays were normal after my car accident. Why am I still having neck and back pain?

This is a question we hear from people after car accidents.

A normal X-ray does not necessarily mean that nothing was injured. X-rays are useful for evaluating bones and identifying certain injuries, but they do not directly show every injury involving muscles, ligaments, spinal discs, or nerves.

After a car accident, you may still experience:

• Neck pain
• Lower back pain
• Headaches
• Pain while sitting or driving
• Numbness or tingling
• Pain traveling into an arm or leg
• Weakness
• Difficulty doing activities that were normal before the accident

At Kingwood Chiropractic Spine and Injury Center, Dr. Tyler Hamel has 25+ years of chiropractic experience, with advanced training in spinal trauma and MRI and extensive experience evaluating people injured in car accidents.

If the ER told you nothing was broken but you’re still hurting, another important question is:

“What changed after the accident?”

When Should I See a Specialist After a Car Accident?

Not every car accident injury can or should be managed with chiropractic care alone.

If you’re experiencing persistent numbness or tingling, weakness in an arm or leg, radiating pain, significant headaches, dizziness, balance problems, or other neurological symptoms after a car accident, additional evaluation by a medical specialist may be appropriate.

Depending on your symptoms, examination findings, and diagnostic imaging, that could include referral to a neurologist, orthopedic specialist, pain management physician, or another appropriate healthcare provider.

I’m Tyler Hamel, DC, FPSC (C), with Kingwood Chiropractic Spine and Injury Center. With more than 26 years of chiropractic experience, my goal is not simply to treat your symptoms, it’s to properly evaluate your injuries and help get you to the right provider when additional care is needed.

How Long Should I See a Chiropractor After a Car Accident?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

How long you may need chiropractic care after a car accident depends on your specific injuries, symptoms, examination findings, functional limitations, and how you respond to treatment.

Someone with a relatively minor injury may improve quickly, while whiplash, neck or back injuries, disc injuries, or nerve-related symptoms may require a different treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Regular re-evaluations are important to measure your progress and determine whether your treatment plan should be modified or additional imaging or specialist evaluation should be considered.

Lower back pain after a car accident is not something to ignore. Even if the crash seemed minor, your spine can experience injuries that may not become painful until hours or even days later.

Common causes of lower back pain after a car accident include disc injuries, ligament sprains, muscle strains, joint injuries, and nerve irritation. Getting an accurate diagnosis early can help you receive the right treatment and prevent the injury from becoming a long term problem.

If you have lower back pain after a car accident, do not guess what is causing it. A thorough evaluation can help identify the source of your pain and determine whether additional imaging or referral to a medical specialist is needed.
