Over the past 20 years, deaths due to overdoses have continued to increase, especially those involving opioids.
There are several harm reduction policies, programs, and practices in place today to help combat overdoses, including drug utilization reviews on the part of health plans to help mitigate opioid overuse. These include Drug Management Programs, retrospective Part D Opioid Drug Utilization Reviews and safety edits. CMS has codified these policies for Medicare beneficiaries too.
Today, International Overdose Awareness Day, helps us remember those who have died as a result of overdose and reinforces the importance of doing what we can to help prevent them.
