We are pleased to announce the David T. Netscher Award for Excellence in Hand Surgery!

Presented annually at graduation, this $1,000 prize recognizes the Baylor College of Medicine Hand Surgery fellow who has contributed most meaningfully to the field and served as a teacher and mentor to residents and medical students throughout their fellowship year.

The award honors the legacy of Dr. David T. Netscher, who served as Hand Surgery Fellowship Director for 24 years and trained nearly 100 fellows during his tenure at BCM. His graduates have gone on to lead programs, chair departments, and hold national leadership positions in Hand Surgery.

The recipient is selected by vote of the core Hand Surgery faculty and recognized at the annual graduation ceremony.

Last Thursday, we hosted athletic trainers and physical therapists from across the Houston area for our annual Advancing Sports Medicine Symposium! Attendees heard from an outstanding group of speakers on topics ranging from concussion care and the use of biologics in orthopedics to ACL repair and cartilage restoration.

Of course, the live demonstrations were the highlight of the day! Dr. Phillip Williams and Dr. Bruce Moseley, orthopedic surgeons in the Joseph Barnhart Department of Orthopedics, each led cadaver demonstrations on ACL repair and cartilage restoration, giving attendees a close-up look at these procedures in action.

We are also grateful to our guest speakers, Dr. Irvin Sulapas and Jennifer Nguyen, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT for generously sharing their time and knowledge with our community.

Already looking forward to next year!

Every year, our Chief Residents have the opportunity to go behind the scenes to learn how the implants we use are designed, manufactured, tested, and quality-checked before reaching our patients.

Itโ€™s a valuable experience that helps our residents better understand every aspect of patient care while also providing time to connect outside the hospital. As our chief residents approach graduation, itโ€™s a great chance to reflect on five years of training, friendship, and shared experiences before taking the next steps in their careers.

When 29-year-old Cynthia began experiencing debilitating back pain, even the simplest daily activities became unbearable. Referred to Dr. Lorenzo Deveza, Orthopedic Oncologist and Orthopedic Surgeon within the Joseph Barnhart Departmnet of Orthopedic Surgery, she finally found answers. Dr. Deveza identified instability in her spine from a prior tumor removal and performed a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, placing transacral screws to stabilize her pelvis and eliminate her pain.

Within just two weeks, Cynthia's life was transformed. "I feel like I got my life back," she said. Click the link below to read her full story!
