Ozempic hair loss 😭😭😭
GLP-1 medications can absolutely be life-changing for metabolic health, but the resulting weight loss can trigger temporary hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium. GLPs can also induce significant malnutrition, leading to hair breakage and poor hair growth.
The good news is that in most cases, this is reversible — and there are ways to support healthier hair growth while continuing your progress.
What I recommend to my patients:
• Prioritize protein intake daily (hair is primarily made of protein)
• Make sure you are taking a good multivitamin if your doctor says it’s ok to do so. I like Pure Encapsulations ONE or Thorne Basics 2/day (available for a 5% discount at Thorne.com/u/lwl)
• Check vitamin D, iron, thyroid and treat if needed
• Manage stress and sleep, both of which impact the hair growth cycle
• Consider evidence-based treatments like topical or oral medications, or Foix laser therapy to regrow hair
And remember: The goal is to lose weight in a medically monitored, nutritionally supported way that protects lean mass, metabolic health, AND hair health. Sometimes that means a slower weight loss journey.
