Frequently, I travel to Galveston to work at Shriners Children’s, performing cleft lip and cleft palate surgery. Each time, I’m reminded of what this town has survived when I go out to grab a bite to eat.
These markers show the water levels from previous hurricanes that have hit the island, and as you can see, Hurricane Ike still holds the record. I cannot even imagine the water reaching this level. When I point out these markers to people visiting Galveston for the first time, they’re always shocked to see just how high the water rose above street level!
