Ever get a full workup done — bloodwork, a physical, the whole thing — and hear "everything looks normal," while still feeling completely off?

That happened to enough of my patients that I built a full episode around it. We go into the Chinese medicine side of nervous-system regulation: what Liver qi stagnation and Shen actually mean, how acupuncture creates a real physiological shift (not just a nice hour of relaxation), and why herbal formulas are matched precisely to the person, not the symptom.

If "normal labs, still not okay" sounds familiar, this one's for you. New episode is up now. Link in the comments ⬇️

You can block out a whole Saturday and still not actually rest, because your body is still scanning for the next thing. Real recovery doesn't start when you lie down. It starts when your nervous system decides it's safe to stand down.

Which part of your day makes your nervous system feel safest? Tell us below.

A patient told me last week that perimenopause made her feel like a stranger in her own body — sharp one day, foggy the next, sleeping fine for a week and then not at all.

A patient told me last week that perimenopause made her feel like a stranger in her own body — sharp one day, foggy the next, sleeping fine for a week and then not at all.

That unpredictability has a name: your nervous system trying to keep pace with hormones that are no longer on a steady rhythm. It's not a personality shift. It's physiology.

Long before I was an acupuncturist, I was an interior designer. Funny enough, that's actually where TCM started to make sense to me.

The first thing you learn in design is that nothing in a room works alone — move one piece, and the whole space shifts. Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the body the same way: your sleep, your digestion, your mood, your energy — none of it happens in a vacuum.

Chase one symptom without asking what it's connected to, and you're rearranging furniture in a room you haven't actually looked at.

You're coping. You could be building capacity instead.

The stress didn't disappear when the job calmed down, or the kids got older, or things finally got "easier." It just stopped announcing itself.

Maybe it looks like this: you're managing everything fine. Nothing's falling apart. You're just tired in a way a weekend doesn't fully fix, a little shorter-fused than you used to be, running on autopilot more days than not. Nobody would call it a crisis. You might not even call it stress.

You don't have to wait until something breaks to start paying attention to what your nervous system has been quietly carrying.

Building the capacity now is easier than rebuilding it later. Prevention isn't a consolation prize. It's the smarter move.

DM me if this is you. I'd love to talk about what building capacity actually looks like.

More than one of these might sound like you: work stress that won’t let up, a hormonal shift throwing everything off, years of carrying more than your share.
If that’s true for you, I want to say it plainly: that’s not confusion. That’s accumulation.

Real nervous systems rarely present as one clean pattern. Work stress compounds a hormonal shift. A long-haul history collides with something that just happened. Your HPA axis doesn’t sort it by label. It absorbs all of it, on the same system, at once.

That’s exactly why one modality alone often falls short. Acupuncture resets. Herbs treat the root. HRV/Coherence training builds capacity. Biofeedback proves the shift is real. Together, they treat the whole system, not just the loudest symptom.

I had a patient recently who was frustrated. Her labs were perfect, but she felt like she was running on empty. That gap is one of the most common things I see in my practice.

Standard labs measure parts: cortisol level, thyroid panel, blood count. All useful, but none of them measure flexibility, whether your nervous system can actually bend under stress and recover once it's over.

That's what heart rate variability (HRV) measures. Not your heart rate itself, but the space between each beat, and how much that space changes moment to moment. A flexible nervous system shifts easily. A rigid one barely moves. It treats a real emergency and a stressful email the same way, and doesn't fully stand down from either.

This is why "my labs are perfect" and "I feel awful" can both be true at the same appointment. It's also why HRV tracking and adrenal stress testing are both part of how I actually work with patients. They measure what standard labs miss.

I see this a lot in my practice: people who handle stress fine in the moment. The crisis hits, they rise to it, they get through it.

The problem isn't the rising. It's what happens after or doesn't.
A truly flexible nervous system does two things: it activates when something real is happening, and it recovers once the threat has passed. Most of the people I work with have the first half down cold. The second half — the actual return to baseline — is where things get stuck.

That's not a character issue. It's physiological, and it's measurable through HRV. And it's trainable, through consistent care that gives the nervous system practice doing both halves of the job.

Take the quiz through the link below to find out where your nervous system stands right now.
