While World Breastfeeding Week was Aug. 1-7, August is also recognized as National Breastfeeding Month in the US.

The United States Breastfeeding Committee declared August as National Breastfeeding Month in 2011, committing to the goal of improving national health through protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding.

Passing important legislation is part of that work, like the passage of the 2022 Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act, also known as the PUMP Act.

While not all mothers will choose breastfeeding, it’s important to protect those who do so they feel safe, supported, and have the proper accommodations to take care of their babies.

It was recently announced that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome would be changed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome to acknowledge that the symptoms of the condition are not solely associated with cysts.

This change in name from PCOS to PMOS signifies a greater understanding of the condition itself, as the previous name characterized the condition as being about cysts with a focus on ovaries, leading to missed diagnoses and ineffective treatment, according to the Society for Women’s Health Research.

By changing the name, it will hopefully bring greater awareness and improve care for people dealing with diagnosed or undiagnosed PMOS.

The name change from PCOS might be sudden, but it will take place over a period of 3 years to allow for physicians and patients to become more familiar with the name change.

Organized by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, World Breastfeeding Week is commemorated each year from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7 to recognize the 1990 Innocenti Declaration, a World Health Organization and UNICEF initiative to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.

WABA focuses on a theme during World Breastfeeding Week each year, and this year, they are dedicated to tracking progress and evaluating the impact of breastfeeding on nutrition, food security, and poverty reduction.

While breastfeeding may not be for every new mother, it remains a low-cost way to feed babies and children, contributing to poverty reduction in communities that exclusively promote and focus on breastfeeding.

Additionally, breastfeeding is a more sustainable option, as less waste is produced, fewer resources are used, and less energy is required at an industrial scale in comparison to formula.

Dealing with symptoms consistent with uterine fibroids? Have you recently had a miscarriage?

If so, you may have been advised to have a dilation and curettage procedure to either help diagnose a condition or treat an existing issue.

A dilation and curettage, also known as a D&C, is a procedure done to remove tissue from the uterus – whether that be to diagnose and treat certain uterine conditions or to clear the uterine lining following a miscarriage or abortion, the Mayo Clinic explains.

During this procedure, either small instruments or medication is used to open the cervix, allowing for a surgical instrument called a curette to remove uterine tissue.

Complications with the procedure are rare, but it’s important to know about those possibilities so you can make informed decisions about your health.

The World Hepatitis Alliance, which celebrated the first World Hepatitis Day in 2008, is dedicated to creating a world free of hepatitis through advocacy, capacity building, and awareness raising.

Hepatitis affects all genders, but women are likely to experience different risks with hepatitis B and C when compared to men.

Postmenopausal bleeding is considered abnormal, according to the Mayo Clinic, and it’s not something to be ignored.

Bleeding may be caused by changes in activity level, an infection, or thinning of the vaginal/vulvar skin, but it could be a sign of something more serious.

Serious causes of bleeding after menopause include cancer and the formation of abnormal cells in the uterine lining, also known as hyperplasia.

Postmenopausal bleeding can also signal other issues like uterine polyps or fibroids, thyroid abnormalities, bleeding disorders, or atrophy of the uterine lining.
