Today, I want to recognize Jamal.

We committed to meeting for our walk and exercise session, and when the rain came down, neither of us looked for excuses. I showed up with a poncho, high energy, and a mindset of “Let’s get it!” Jamal showed up ready to go and proved once again that he is a man of his word.

As leaders, we have a responsibility to do more than talk about commitment—we must demonstrate it.

This experience reminded me of a few leadership principles:

• Lead by example with a great attitude.

• Support others during difficult times. The rain is a reminder of the storms we all face in life.

• Never ask others to do something you’re unwilling to do yourself.

• Inspire others to become better than you—and genuinely want that for them.

• When things go well, praise the team. When things go poorly, accept responsibility as the leader.

The lesson is simple: ALWAYS SHOW UP to the best of your ability.

Character isn’t built when conditions are perfect. It’s revealed when they’re not.
