🧠 RECOVERY IS MORE THAN NOT USING — IT’S LEARNING HOW TO MANAGE WHAT YOU FEEL.
Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) can bring emotional ups and downs even after substance use has stopped or significantly decreased. Irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, low energy, cravings, and feeling emotionally overwhelmed can make recovery challenging.
This is where Emotional Intelligence (EI) becomes a powerful recovery skill.
Emotional intelligence teaches us to:
❤️ Recognize what we are feeling.
🧠 Understand what may be triggering the emotion.
⏸️ Pause before reacting impulsively.
🗣️ Communicate our needs in healthier ways.
🤝 Reach out for support instead of isolating.
🌱 Choose a response that supports recovery rather than returning to old behaviors.
Experiencing a difficult emotion doesn’t mean you have to act on it. The goal is to recognize the feeling, understand what it is telling you, and choose a healthy response.
💬 IMPACTFUL QUOTE
“Recovery begins when you realize: I can feel this emotion without letting it make the decision for me.”
Every time you identify a trigger, regulate an emotion, ask for help, or choose a healthier coping skill, you’re strengthening your recovery.
