Please join us on Friday, August 1st as we welcome th Houston Rights Property Association as they present a free community screening and panel discussion of The Magic Hole at Talento Bilingüe de Houston. The film explores Austin’s $1.6B convention center expansion and the way public dollars — especially Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) revenues — are used to subsidize tourism infrastructure at the expense of local communities.

MECA’ own Sixth Ward, the East End, Third Ward and other culturally rich neighborhoods contribute to HOT revenue but receive only a fraction back in the form of direct investment or cultural programming.

This event is designed to bring these equity issues to light and invite deeper public dialogue about how Houston allocates its cultural dollars.

We’ll follow the screening with a panel focused on how these same issues are playing out in Houston — particularly the GRB expansion, the diversion of HOT revenue from neighborhoods like the East End and Third Ward, and the implications of SB 1057.

🎯 Why This Matters to our communities

This conversation aligns deeply with current challenges facing our neighborhoods and districts where public investment continues to flow into downtown projects while cutting off access and cultural support for surrounding neighborhoods.

A community screening and panel discussion of "The Magic Hole" which explores Austin’s $1.6B convention center expansion.
