Serving with Identity and Dignity

Every person who comes to Faith In Practice is more than a patient, a diagnosis, or a medical need. Each one has a name, a story, a family, and a God-given identity that deserves to be honored.

Through compassionate care, our volunteers take time to listen, connect, and remind every patient that they are seen, valued, and loved. Because healing is not only about treating the body. It is also about restoring dignity, nurturing hope, and recognizing the person God created.

A life rooted in Service

For 18 years, Flory, a nurse from Quesada, Jutiapa, has poured her heart into serving others through Faith In Practice.

At home, she treasures time with her family and her beautiful 13-year-old daughter. In her community, she is known as someone people trust, a compassionate nurse who listens, connects, and is always willing to help.

Working alongside Dra. Patty Baiza since 2007, Flory saw firsthand how important it was for women to have access to preventive care close to home. Her desire to serve inspired her to open her own clinic, where she could perform VIA screenings and help women take an active role in caring for their health.

Later, with encouragement from Julissa Pellecer, Flory stepped into another important chapter of her service: leading her first Faith In Practice medical clinic on her own.

What has kept her volunteering all these years is simple: the patients.

She has witnessed the difficult reality many families face when affordable medical care—or a surgery they desperately need—feels out of reach. She has listened to their stories, shared in their worries, and walked beside them as they searched for hope.

Each person she has met along the way has left something with her. Their stories have shaped her into the compassionate and humble woman she is today—and have only strengthened her desire to keep serving.

Because a life dedicated to service is not measured only in years—it is measured in the lives changed along the way.

For most of his life, Rolando Barahona, 60, from La Libertad, Petén, worked in agriculture, using his strength and his hands to provide for his family.

Then, little by little, his knees began to fail. Three years ago, the pain forced him to stop working. Unable to earn a living, Rolando began asking for help in his community just to get by. As the months passed, he fell into depression and began losing hope.

That is when Doña Tonita, one of our volunteer leaders, found him and helped bring him to a medical clinic for evaluation.

Rolando came for surgery with almost nothing, only the hope that somehow a miracle would be possible.

And then, something beautiful happened.

Other patients receiving surgery that same week learned about Rolando’s financial situation. Together, they contributed what they could to help him pay for his surgery.

In one of the hardest seasons of his life, Rolando discovered that he was not alone. He was seen, supported, and surrounded by people who cared for him. After three years of standing still, he is now looking toward a new chapter with a chance to rebuild his life and begin again.

Sometimes, God’s miracles arrive through the hands of people willing to care for one another.

Faithful Hearts, Loving Prayers

Casa de Fe was founded on April 28, 2003 a very special day in the story of Faith in Practice. From the beginning, it became more than a place to stay. It became a place filled with prayer, comfort, and love.

A beautiful group of 40 women and 3 men felt called to create a special space to pray for the patients of Casa de Fe. Led by founders Doña Martita and Dely Arzú, alongside Fray José Contrán, their mission was simple and powerful: to share the Gospel and lift every patient in prayer.

For 23 years, this beautiful tradition has continued every Wednesday. The group begins their day at La Merced Church, then makes their way to Casa de Fe, where they spend hours praying with and for the patients. Afterward, they share lunch together at the mercado, carrying with them the joy of service and community.

Over the years, many women have come and gone, but those who continue this mission carry the same heart: to share God’s love with as many people as they can.

At Faith in Practice, it is an honor to witness how God works through their prayers. Through their presence, our patients, staff, and community feel loved, remembered, and cared for. 💙

This past Saturday, our 2026 Annual Celebration Chairs, Dr. Mike and Julie Berend, hosted a wonderful mixer at The Post Oak Hotel, bringing together Faith In Practice orthopaedic surgeons, board members, volunteers, and friends as we look ahead to our Known and Loved Annual Celebration on October 16 at The Revaire, honoring The Profession of Orthopaedic Surgery and Free Wheelchair Mission.

We are grateful for the leadership of Mike and Julie, along with our Co-Chairs Norm and Donna Lewis, as we prepare for this special evening.

A heartfelt thank you to our Board Chair, Dr. Cary Moorhead, and his wife, Julie, our CEO, Dr. Ben Adesope, our staff, FIP board members, orthopaedic surgeons, volunteers, and supporters who joined us.

It was a beautiful evening of fellowship and connection—and a reminder of what sits at the heart of our mission: to see, serve, and love each person as they are known and loved.

We can’t wait to celebrate together on October 16! To purchase tables or tickets visit https://donate.faithinpractice.org/event/2026-celebration/e795307

Faith Made a Way 🙏💙

Sister Maria Inés has spent her life answering God’s call to serve others across Perú, Honduras, and Guatemala.

But when severe knee problems began limiting her ability to continue that mission, she faced a difficult reality. The surgeries she needed in Guatemala City were simply too expensive.

Her response was one of surrender and faith:

“Well, God, I will stay as I am.”

But God had another plan.

Through Vilma, one of our local volunteers, Sister Maria Inés found Faith in Practice. She arrived uncertain and a little afraid, but was quickly surrounded by compassion, dignity, and love.

“How wonderful,” she said. “This is the place God sent me.”

And even while waiting for her own evaluation, she began praying for the patients and volunteers around her asking God to protect those who had come to serve.

Today, after receiving her first knee surgery through Faith in Practice, Sister Maria Inés has renewed hope that she can continue doing what she has always felt called to do: serve others faithfully.

Her story is a beautiful reminder that when the road feels impossible, faith keeps trusting and sometimes, God makes a way we never expected. 💙

A single visit can be the beginning of a much-needed next step.

💙 During Sawyer #917, 836 patients were registered and 1,158 office visits took place across general, gynecology, orthopedic, mobility, VIA, and pediatric clinics.

With 289 referrals, the care provided went beyond the clinic itself—helping connect patients with additional treatment and services when further care was needed. Each consultation created an opportunity to listen, evaluate, and guide patients toward the next step in their healing journey.
